Can anyone recommend any good musician movies? Preferably true stories? I heard they were going to do a movie on the life of Stevie Ray Vaughan, but I don't think they ever did. I saw The Doors movie a few years back, that was good, but I always wanted to see movies that portray musicians the way they were , instead of how people romanticize them. They should make movies on the lives of Randy Rhoads, Hendrix, Jaco, Elvis etc..... |

'Almost Famous' is also fantastic, if you want fiction as well that is. |

Some of my faves.
Walk The Line - Johnny Cash
Ray - The Great Ray Charles
The Commitments - Band comes together and falls apart. We've all been there.
The Last Waltz - Great concert movie with interviews. America's Band
Hail Hail Rock & Roll - Concert and interviews with Chuck Berry
What's Love Got to Do With It- Could Ike Turner really have been that bad?
The Grateful Dead Movie - Concert and Interviews
Festival Train - Moving concert through Canada in the early 70's. Fun to look back.

And of course there is Pink Floyd's The Wall movie.
And +1 to 'Almost Famous', for "Sex, drugs and Rock'n'Roll" in the 70s.
And "This is Spinal Tap", for a comedy about a fake 70s rock band.

Documentaries are generally more accurate than movies based on the lives of musicians. And a good documentary can be very entertaining. A good example is "Dig!", which is about the "war" between the Brian Jonestown Massacre and the Dandy Warhols. |

I don't really care for the Dolls, but it's well worth watching. They show it often on Dish Network. |

A bit different ones:
Kiss: Kiss meets the phantom of the park
"The Young Ones": Bad news on tour. (humor)
Moscow on the Hudson (a drama really)

Don't forget to look for Standing In The Shadows Of Motown...probably have to find the dvd of that one. |

For non-fiction, No Direction Home, the Bob Dylan doc, is wonderful. Unless you don't like Dylan. |

There I said it.
Clint Eastwood's Bird is very, very good. I had just read bios on both Parker & Miles...Bird seemed spot on with the accounts in both books.
