What are some musicians (guitarists/bassists/drummers/etc.) that you think have chops but don't show case them. Whether it be because of their genre or lack of desire to showcase said chops.

Malcolm Young, of AC/DC, is actually a great lead player, but hasn't played one since their first album. |

Comparing his playing with the Allman's to when he's playing with other bassists-complete 180. The video that i'm thinkin of is Wooten, Steve Bailey, Bill Dickens, and Oteil. Totally sick.
Other bassists-maybe Tony Kanal from No Doubt [yeah-goin way back]. Not a whole lot comin to mind though.

The best example for me is Jimmie Johnson, who plays beautifully with James Taylors band, and then does fusion gigs with Alan Holdsworth on the side.
Jimmy Mayer with the Jimmy Buffet band is similar.... totally lays down the appropriate parts with Buffet, and then heads to New York and does straight ahead gigs on DB.
There are MANY other examples |

| | | | Another great example of this, this time for drums, is Vinnie Colaiuta (not sure if I spelled that correctly). Vinnie is every bit the artist and jazz/fusion monster as Dave Weckl... but, he totally nails the drum chair for Faith Hill at the moment. Totally groovin' and playing perfectly for the gig on her tour, and then just rips it up with Jeff Beck or whoever the next minute. |
