Briefly.
My family is currently hosting a French student who is very interested in music. Does anyone know of any internationally known bands from Florida? There are a few like Matchbox 20, and Some boy bands. are there any others of note?

currently performing, and from Florida originally?
born in Florida, and left to become famous?
including those who have passed away?

Not sure what you're looking for, but a couple of the big and obvious ones are Tom Petty (Gainesville) and Jimmy Buffett (Key West).
The Allmans grew up in Daytona Beach, and the ABB was formed in Jax ... Dickey lives near Bradenton (or did live near Bradenton) ... Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi are based in Jax.
J.J. Grey and Mofro are based in Jax.
Bo Diddley spent the latter part of his life in Alachua County.
Lynyrd Skynyrd (Jax)
Molly Hatchet (Jax)
Jim Morrison was born in Melbourne, and attended St. Pete JC and FSU
The Outlaws (Tampa)
plenty more, probably..

Thanks, that is a lot more than I have been able to dig up on my own. I think she is looking for currently performing bands who's history includes Florida. She attends lots of music festivals in France, so she is looking for a piece of history from a band that might play where she is from one day.

well, yeah, if you're talking jazz guys, there are tons of them in Florida, including, as mentioned, Jaco and Jeff Berlin, South Florida guys like Ira Sullivan and Arturo Sandoval, Larry Coryell (now based in Vero Beach), Sam Rivers (Orlando), ex-Ellington guys John Lamb and Buster Cooper (Tampa Bay area), and on an on.

But I have a feeling that the OP was talking about major/famous rock and pop groups.

Jimmy Buffet lives in West Palm,
Shinedown is indeed from Jacksonville

Jacksonville native Pat Boone was a popular 1950s singer and teen idol. During the 1960s, the Classics Four was the most successful pop rock band from Jacksonville. Southern Rock was defined by the Allman Brothers Band, which formed in 1969 in Jacksonville. Lynyrd Skynyrd achieved near cult status and inspired Blackfoot, Molly Hatchet and .38 Special, all successful in the 1970s. The 1980s were a quiet decade for musical talent in Jacksonville. The next local group to achieve national success was nu-metal band Limp Bizkit in 1994. Other popular Hip Hop acts in the 1990s included 95 South, 69 Boyz and the Quad City DJ's. The bands Inspection 12, Cold and Yellowcard were also well known and had a large following. Following the millennium, Burn Season, Evergreen Terrace, Shinedown, Electric President, The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, Black Kids and The Summer Obsession were notable bands from Jacksonville.

If I recall I dont think there is too much music in and around Melbourne...travel south to West Palm Ft Lauderdale..and there is a good blues scene with many working local acts.
