Unhappy Musicians losing fingers

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi Guys/Gals

Well this has been a bizarre month, firstly my father (who is an incredible Classical guitar whizz) lost his left hand index finger after a hand/lawnmower encounter and to-day an incredible local guitarist/bassist lost 2 of his fingers on his left hand following a fall from a ladder (amazing he wasnt killed).

This begs the question..its one thing to suffer the trauma of losing a limb but what if you earn a living as a musician..this must be doubly worrying also it must be mentally such a devastating blow to suddenly lose the ability to do what you love doing the most.

In the case of my father he came out of hospital and immediately re-strung his guitars and is now woodshedding to get comfortable playing left handed so I know he's gonna be ok but in the case of our local friend I hope he can make the same transition.

This guy is an amazing musician and he helped so many young people to get to grips with their instruments (myself included)..on top of this he's also a genuinely nice person and would go out of his way to help anyone...he's loved by every musician in the locality..the thing is, music is his life and he supports a wife and three kids with it..now he's in a situation where he's going to be out of action for months if not permanently.

The good thing is that he'll have no shortage of support both financially and personally as he has done so much for the local musicians over the years that we will look after him...mentally though I dont know how he will cope.

tragic

Phil Keaggy (guitarist) is missing half a finger, and he's unbelievably good.

A friend of mine who is a great pianist just lost his right index finger in a construction accident. He was quite disconsolate, but now he is back to playihng and doing well.

I once saw a guy in a mariachi band who had apparently lost part of all four fingers on his left hand. From where I was sitting it looked like about half of each finger was gone. He was the bass guitar player, and somehow he was able to fret in spite of that. Admittedly not complicated parts, but still...

Jerry Garcia and Phil Keaggy had the same injury, and may have, depending on the the account you believe, received their injuries in the same way.

Somehow this usually ends up being written as 'Jerry and Phil lost the same finger.' and someone replies with "How did they have the SAME finger?"

Iommi...

He's the first one that came to my mind too. His injury may not have been as bad as some others, but he was able to get past it and keep going, just like the rest of these great guys.

Man, I worked on the floor of a metal fabrication shop for a few years. losing a finger was my greatest fear. I've seen press brake operators almost lose whole hands when a 4 ton press comes down on it, I also met a gut who has all 8 fingers (not thumbs) choped off at the 1st knuckle by a shear, terrifying!!!!. Luckily I am in the office now doing design and CNC programming, cant lose a finger clicking a mouse (I think)

To the OP, the human body is truly amazing at how much it can adapt, if the music is in these 2 guys, it will find a way to get out!!!
