Are musicians short?

Is the average musician shorter than the average person? It sure seems that way to me from the hundreds of people I've played with.

I've played with lots of really short people, lots of average-height ones and quite a few that were a few inches above average. But really tall... I can only think of one guitarist and maybe a couple of the girls from my children's choir who are probably taller than most boys their age.

It also seems like the difference is bigger in the US than in Europe - I've probably played with more people who are taller than me in Poland than in Texas even though the average Texan is definitely bigger.

Could there be a (small) negative correlation between height and musical ability and/or interest in music?

I'm 5 feet 5 inches and just about everyone I play with is taller than me . Actually, come to think of it, I've only played with one person who was shorter than me! But in the "real" world there's plenty shorter than me....

I have noticed people from Europe seem to be taller though.... maybe all the sun here keeps us shorter (like plants).

Oh well.......I still play the tallest instrument

I don't know about musicians in general, but it seems that bass players are often tall.

Here's a link to a height thread(with poll) from Off-Topic:How tall are you?

48.19% of the 166 people that voted in the poll were 6' or taller.

I actually noticed this very thing when I was at music school. Musicians are short. Of course, so are actors, models, and most the rest of the entertainment industry. It's just the way of things. Couldn't for the life of me tell you why, though.

Maybe not having the size for sports? Especially in America, where American football and basketball are popular and require size. If you're big and well-coordinated then basketball may be a better option than music.

I'm 6'4", almost 6'5". I tower over almost anyone I meet.

I think it's probably about even actually, considering I've met quite a few musicians who are taller than me, and I'm 6'1". There's always going to be a fair share of people wondering why everyone's so short, and there's always going to be a roughly equal number of people wondering the opposite.

In the end it's all about perspective.
