"Must know" blues tunes. Need list.

Sign in to disble this ad
In the 90s I played nothing but jazz and there is a set of Jazz tunes that EVERY Jazz player knows. I could go sub for another bass player with no worries as all the Jazz groups in town knew this basic list of standards.

Now that I have gotten sick of playing jazz for the time being I am working on learning classic blues styles. I feel good with my basic feels but now need to learn a list of tunes I can use for open jam sessions. I have always found gigs by going to open jamz and meeting new players. There are so many great blues tunes I don't know where to start. Many tunes don't require any special bass line and for those I can just play what feels right but many others do have specific bass lines or hooks.

Any links or suggestions are welcome.

Erm... how about "I Woke Up This Mornin'"

How about going to some of the blues based open jam sessions in your town and seeing what the local definition of 'standards' is? Like most genres, blues is pretty diverse once you get down to it so it will help to focus on what's going down among the people you want to play with.

The Thrill is Gone, Stormy Monday, Statesboro Blues,Boom Boom Boom Boom,Crossroads, Hellhounds On My Trail, Ain't No Good Life...

Just look around. These are the first classic titles I thought of. I stopped trying to come up with new ones as soon as I started typing.

If you can handle jazz, blues is cake.

I'm in a band that does a ton of blues tunes, and I'm a jazz moron.

Stormy Monday is fun. Blues with an unexpected twist.

Baby Please Don't Go - everybody and their mother has covered it, including Aerosmith currently.
