Sign in to disble this ad
Hi all;

I came across this EXCELLENT article on jamming and sitting in.

It should be mandatory reading for ALL musicians before they can buy their instrument.

Check it out.

hmmm... love the retro 1997 look of that webpage. Red text on a black background looks so cool, and is so easy to read!

It was a bit difficult to read that red text on the black background for sure. "wash your hands afterwards"?? Not sure why that is important ...

Okay, it's long. But this is what I pictured.

The Jazz Jam Session Primer: A First-Timer’s Guide By Bill Anschell

It is my personal favorite open mic night article, ever.

I'm not a big open jam guy, but all of that seemed like pretty basic, common courtesy stuff.

Don't solo
Don't play root note eighths
Don't do 1-3-6-8 progressions

Doesn't leave much left

lol: "And now, their world turned upside down, they finally see the good in one another: A saxophonist who so desperately loves the music; a pianist with a brilliant grasp of harmony; a drummer who throws himself headlong into the musical moment; a bassist who selflessly lays down the pulse; a trombonist striving to overcome the handicap of his useless instrument. Surely this magical unit can’t be so easily undone."

"If you talk to the bass player during the break, you wont be able to tell if he's listening".

Let me help you out with that. I'm not.

Unless, you're another bass player.

Good stuff, but this stinks a bit...

Quote:
Bass solos are like a dancing bear. It’s not that the bear is a great dancer, it’s that the bear dances at all. Jaco Pastorius, Johnny B. Gayton, and a few others could be considered the Fred Astaires of dancing bears and the exceptions that prove the rule. All other mere mortals pay homage to the pocket and groove
I'll tear it up like Fred Astaire when the moment is right.
