Muzak has filed for bankruptcy. While there is a chance they can restructure and survive, we can still hope they don't

Isn't that the true passage into adulthood? Hearing a Muzak version of a song you loved...

What will life be like without Muzak renditions of Creed, Linkin Park, or JayZ???

Amen all around. To hell with them. They were the first company to introduce the 'music to the slaves' in the factories, to boost production, and they made damn near a science of the 'constant assault', in addition to producing horrific versions of good songs, musical Velveeta.

Let them die a quick death; unfortunately, they have plenty of competition these days....

Wow, it *must* be true, the Onion did an "American Voices" article on it

http://www.theonion.com/content/amvo...for_bankruptcy

The local paper said they owed $500 million and had assets of $50 thousand

Ted Nugent finally has his revenge! I bet we actually hear a sound bite from him about it, too.

I've saved this bizarre graph, which purports to analyze the impact of certain variables in muzak pertaining to "mood". Can't make any real sense of it, but at least it looks vaguely scientific.

Good riddance.

I'm sure that is the whole point... it looks vaguely scientific without really meaning anything.

Fun fact, the French composer Erik Satie invented Muzak in the 1890's with his "furniture music". He premiered it with a chamber group at an art show, and when people stopped to listen to the people playing, he shooed them away, trying as hard as he could to get them to not pay attention to the music. Needless to say, he was ahead of his time.

I would think that he's the reason their business tanked: they weren't up to the competition....

In the late 70s I worked a couple years at a Caldor store in Connecticut. The piped-in Muzak was excruciatingly bland. I'm pretty sure I remember hearing a severely white-bread version of Long Train Running one night.

Part of the Muzak formula back then was that they did their own arrangements and recordings, and the arrangements were heavy on strings (violins, et al) and used no cymbals--the better to create a "soothing" retail environment that would be conducive to shopping and buying (and for some people, gagging).

The worst I heard was Guns n' Roses' "Welcome to the Jungle"

Even somehow attempting to ignore how horribly bad it sounded, who would consider "Welcome to the Jungle" to be soothing?
