my band decision ...

Sign in to disble this ad
i know there already is a thread " true to yourself " , but ...

my blues band , which i started in 1997 , hasn't gigged since October '05 , and
now suddenly i'm being offered a chance to play for a local mainstream rock band .

www.notorioussinners.com

* guitarist is talented and thinks i'm another John Paul Jones ...
* drummer is also very talented and super friendly , nice drum set ...
* singer has great voice and hauls his own PA system ...
* a keyboard player is in the works , but have heard great things about him ..
* an actual booking agent
* an actual road crew

i guess i'll just keep in touch with the blues guys ... but for now , it's rock 'n' roll for me !!

the singer / harmonica player in the blues band is my best friend ...
so this is just a little bit tough .

You know what's gonna happen...

...The guys in the Blues band are going to hear that you're gigging with another band, and that's going to light a fire under their butts to get gigging again. Then, you're going to be caught in the middle.

Anyway, I hope everything works out, and you enjoy the Rock band gig...

Sounds like going with the rock & roll band is the right decision. You're friends in the other band will understand and get over it. Either they'll find someone else to play bass and start gigging again, or your departure will cause the band to fizzle out. Either way, you'll be fine.

... yeah , the thing is , i was always the guy who did the schmoozing at the bars and venues to get us gigs ,
i called all the numbers , spent my dime to pay for any fliers , etc.

i told my friend about this last night ... unfortunately , he seemed a little crushed ...
i guess ''time will tell'' about our friendship .

10 months without a gig? That's a long time. What happened?

i stopped booking us , that's what .
.. i just finally got tired of being the only adult in the band .

we did gig steady for at least eight years ,
but as i already stated , i was the only one doing the booking ...

i don't really want to get into the personal differences .

Ohhhhhh! Yep..time for a change alright Mister. Follow your heart. Your pal in the Blues thing will just have to get over it. I'd push aside the guilt and go with the new opportunity..
(IMHO of course)

Who wouldnt take the chance to join a band like the one you're being offered? I'm sure any of the guys in your blues band would do the same, so don't feel guilty or anything about leaving!

To me it sounds like you have already been out of the blues band for a while, just not physically. Change is good man. I wouldn't trade being in my rock band for anything in the world. I love playing rock. I've been in blues bands and metal bands, but rock, for me, is the most fufilling. You can do alot musically, get good medlodies, and still get alot of good listener response.

Thumbs up ...thank you TalkBass ...

thanks to everyone for the support !!

i talked to my friend again , and he seems to be ok with this move ...
we may still work another project together , but with different band members ...
the rest of the original band decided to quit altogether ... oh well .

* slightly off topic :
ya' know ...
it's funny about friendships ...
people i haven't seen or heard from in over twenty years have suddenly started to call me .

Well, guess you definitely made the right decision. Eight years is a really good run for most bands anyway.

yeah i guess so ...
but , he and i have been in and out of the same bands for over twelve years ...
and we've seen 'em come and go .

lot's of different geetar players ,
and too many drummers to even remember their names .

...so , as Marcus Alan said earlier ,
it's "time for change" ...

and i'm looking forward to it !!

wow , how things have changed ...
i'm still playing in the classic rock band , but i've also been sitting-in on other projects ...

my friend { from the blues band } called me last week and said he found a new drummer ,
and asked if i be interested in a jam ... of course i said yes , and dang , am i glad i did !!

a smokin'drummer with his own PA system , who actually knows more than one type of blues shuffle ,
and can still be very funky !
he's a part time DJ { i know , i know ...} , and has many , many contacts here and all over Texas ..

looks like i'll be in two bands for now , but
if things progress the way i think they might , i'll go with the blues again ...
