Just wanted to share some news about my weekend.
Last night my R&B cover band "Soul Focus" took first first place in the "Battle of the Corporate Bands", an annual nationwide contest sponsored by FORTUNE Magazine. The contest is for bands that consist mostly of employees from the same company. It's basically a corporate fundraiser for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland Ohio, and that's where the final round of competition is held. Was an incredibly good time, a great party, and I met some really cool people from all over the country (especially the bass players, of course).
Ours is a 10-piece band with horns, multiple vocalists, etc. Our set consisted of such tunes as "What Is Hip?" by Tower of Power, "Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is" by Chicago, "Feelin' Alright" by Traffic/Joe Cocker, and "I Wish" by Stevie Wonder -- all fun tunes for a bass player!

Definitely the highllight of my amateur musical career! I'm really proud of our set -- I got to cover bass lines from Rocco, Nathan Watts, Carol Kaye, and Peter Cetera. I'm fairly new to the world of bass (this is only my 2nd year playing), so it's been a great ieducation. Although I flubbed about 5 seconds of the Cetera.
By the way, the main prize for winning is that each band member earned 2 free tickets to any Continental Airlines worldwide destination. My wife and I are planning to go to Italy next July.

It actually happened pretty organically. She's the wife of our trumpet player, and they both come from a classical music background. She was already in our band as a backup singer, and after a while we started doing songs where having a 4th horn would be really helpful, so she started playing. It works!
Thanks again, you guys on this site have helped me a lot for the past two years!
