Question My Band's New Name - Love It or Hate It?

Sign in to disble this ad
So I'm in a fairly new project (drummer and 1 of the 2 guitarists were from my former band). We initially picked the name "The Garage All-Stars" poking fun at ourselves (we are all-stars in the garage but no where else kinda thing). A few of the members hated it so we went down the long, long, long road of coming up with a new name. For the record, we are a rock band that does about a 50/50 mix of popular classic and modern rock tunes. We play mostly "B" venues here in the Baltimore/Washington area and already have gigs lined up for this month using the Garage All-Stars name.

Niether of the names are really established with the public since this is a new project and we are lauching our first gig next Saturday. The bar owers were told Garage All-Stars, but this early, a name change should not effect us.

After many weeks and back and forth with several names, the one that was decided upon is "Jane Loves Dick", referenencing the old and innocent Dick and Jane children books from the 1940's, 50's and 60's and putting a bit on an evil twist on the name.

I'm still not sure how well recieved this name will be with bar and pub owners. I'm almost willing to bet that some won't post it on their signs out front but we can always ask them to just put "JLD" on the sign.

So what do you all think? Bad move or funny and ok? In addition to voting PLEASE add comment (in other words, post a reply)!

Im not offended by much, and Im not offended by your name choice, but I dont like it. IF its a joke, fun, side project band thats cool, but if its your serious project you'll want others to take you seriously too, right? Who knows though, my friend has quite a following going with his project "I hate you when you're pregnant" It just depends on what youre going for. But its not really that funny.

I like band names that show a sense of humor. In fact, one of my favorite local bands in the 80s was "The 4 Sknns". I also know a guy who played in a trio called "Big Jimmy and the Twins" (a sly reference to, well, figure it out). But "Jane Loves Dick" seems just a little too obvious, and might be too crude for some people. Maybe you can come up with something funny that's also a little more subtle?

Then again, I used to like the idea of naming a band "Live Sex Act", just because it would look funny on a club's marquee.

I LOVE it, its flamboyant and cool. But if you're playing at clubs the manager might not be too happy about it, otherwise a great name.

I'm not offended, nor do I like it.

Like someone said earlier, it's innuendo is too obvious. That will casue problems IMHO.
Wasn't there a fairly recent movie titled Fun with Dick and Jane?

I think the problem with Jane Loves Dick is you know, at least once a night, someone will yell out how the band "Loves Dick".... That's fine, if you love Dick, great, but if you don't love Dick in that manner, than you just may get pissed.

I think JLD would be fine but Jane Loves Dick... i don't know, I would probably put some other name, there's thousands of other options.

It's a funny play on words but the other posters are right. It will just bring you grief. It makes me go too.

I like your old band name better. Just keep it. It's kinda funny.

It's also very humble. I think that's really cool.
