I used to take guitar lessons for about 6 months in '93. I gave my brother my old Alvarez electric guitar, but I want to get him something a little better.

I have no clue when it comes to the guitar market. What is a good budget guitar for someone who is just beginning, but taking it seriously? Are the SX guitars about the same quality as the basses? How about Squier vs MIM strats? Any other suggestions from those of you who play guitar as well as bass?

I've got an AL-3100 wide neck. Its pretty awesome. Sounds great and is very comfortable to play. It also is balanced nicely which for me is always an instrument kiss of death as to whether or not I like it. I can honestly say I have no intention of modding anything on it.

I think the question here is what music is he/will he be playing. That Alvarez is a great rhythm guitar. If he ends up doing lead work then I'd point you to a hollow body F hole electric. What does he say he would like?

I got my daughter a used Cort (sorry, don't know the model) off CL the same time I got my starter bass, for about $100 and the seller threw in a little practice amp with ten or fifteen watts. I don't know much about guitar brands but the music shop guys who set it up said it was a very good choice for a starter guitar.

Strats are a great standard guitar. I know people who own MIM ones and are very happy with them.

On the other hand, it might be worth looking at used G&L's. There are a few on the bay, and G&L are great value for money.

That said, I don't really know about guitars. You'd probably be better off looking at reviews etc.

A squier vintage modified strat would be a great choice.

I agree with the above, Squier would be my choice for a cheap guitar. Ibanez also has some cool inexpensive guitars that are solid. I play bass and my brother plays guitar...we both started on cheaper Ibanez models. I think you can even get Ephiphone Les Paul and SG knockoffs for right around $200 and I'm sure those would be great for someone starting out.

squier tele is my choice but i dont like the single coils on either strats or tele because of their hum which goes crazy with distortion you know. but i like tele's a lot, maybe someday i will buy a tele with a humbucker or something
