My First Audition

So I put an add up on craig's list because nobody I play with at home is serious, so I wanted to find a band that need a temp bassist for the summer, within half an hour I got an email. The band is a bouncy rock vibe combined with an interpolish sound. The bass shouldn't be hard, but i'm so $#% nervious. I've never had to audition for a part, I always just hook up with musicians I meet. Anybody have some wisdom to calm my nerves?

You'll be fine. If they provide a tunes list before hand-learn them like the back of your hand. If they didn't-i'd say listen to a lot of the music that is in the style you will be playing.

Something that i do when i have certain gigs lined up is to listen to a mix that is heavy in that genre. E.g. today/last night/i just got back from a 3hr upright gig where it was all singer-songwriter tunes. SO i listened to the CDs i have of the particular people in a heavy rotation in addition to what i normally listen to.

its always hard to do that sort of thing when you dont know the music because when you get there and you can tpick up something right away you look like an idiot.

yesterday i went and played with a spanish-matal-folk band and i didnt get a riff right away cuz the guy was mumbeling in half spanish and i looked stupid because of it. turns out it they were really easy songs to play. but he apparently was really impressed and i got the gig so.

keep in mind that if you dont pick it up right away, it doesnt really mean anything becuase they should know your at a disadvantage.

and if they expect you to pick it up right away and fit into a band that has been playing for however long, then maby you dont want to be playing with them
