Ok I have said I am in many grades on TB so i wouldnt get looked down apon as just a kid. I am in high school thinking of a career. Im in ninth grade and have been playin bass for 3 years. I love music and want a job in this feild. I know i wont get sick of a job in music and will be intrested in it. My parents want me to be a doctor, teacher, or pharmisit. I feel that those feilds will be swamped with people trying to get into them. So I was thinking that being a profesional record producer would be a good feild. I get to work with music artist, record music (I record music ith my band and im always the one workin the controls), and get paid for doin what I like. I brought this to TB to see if anyone is in this field to ask if there is alot of money to be made in this field, where to start, and whats the road to eventually owning my own studio. Thanks.

I pray for children who says; "I'm gonna be a pro soccer player when I grow up!".
Same thing goes for people who says; "I'm gonna be a famous [insert-musician-profession] when I grow up!".
If they follow up on the first line with; "Or I'm gonna be a [insert-easy-to-become-job] if the other one fails!", the kid is probably quite smart.

This does not answer your question, but it might get you thinking longer.

Wookie, if you are serious about going into audio recording you should look into the various avenues that can get you to your goal. There are special schools specifically for audio recording. You would not receive a college degree, but you would have some certification depending the school you attend. School of Audio Engineering (SAE) comes to mind. One of my buddies went to the New York City campus. They are all over the world.
You should also really consider going to a four year university that offers a major in audio recording/engineering. You never know what may happen in life, and having a college degree can only benefit you.
You should also go and talk to your high school's college advisor or just a guidance counselor. Good luck.

I'm glad you got something out of it. Research is the first step in a well-informed decision.

I suggest you do a little research on that. There are pretty severe shortages of doctors, pharmacists & teachers these days, and most predictions are that the shortages will only get worse. There aren't enough medical students in schools to replace the large percentage of doctors who are nearing retirement age. The average pharmacist now makes over $100,000/year -- not bad for only 2 extra years of college (after the 4-year degree).

And with record sales plummeting and recording software making things pretty simple, who knows what kind of future there will be in the recording & audio engineering industry.

But I'm not here to nag you -- I'll let your parents do that. I'm just saying, give it some more thought -- you're still young and have time to decide.

As far as schools go, you should look into Full Sail in Orlando as well. I've known a few people who have went there (including my brother) and loved it.

On another note, keep your options open. I wanted to be a professional musician all through high school and went to college and was a music performance major for two years before I figured out it wasn't for me. I did realize that my interest was on the tech side of music and I changed majors and am now extremely happy to be an audio tech. Just keep an eye out. You can't just jump to the top. Give yourself time and don't focus on money because you'll never find it if that's all you are looking for. Find out what you are good at first.

Vandelay is right

There's a big shortage in healthcare. Yes, it's very competitive and the wages are only going up (at least for pharmacists). Small correction, once you enter a pharmacy school it's 4 years. A minimum of 6 years total; if you have a previous degree, that makes 8 years total. If you can work in a job that you love, you will be one lucky guy. Don't give up your dreams, but continue studying a broad range of subjects to keep your career and educational options open. Good luck!
