My music taste is not diverse

Sign in to disble this ad
I remember when I was a bit younger, I repeated the phrase every music lover has stated: "My music taste is so diverse, I love everything from blank to blank!" As if that proved I listened to everything under the sun. By the way, I think I probably said everything from Ani DiFranco to Pantera or something.

When I think about it now, I pretty much like rock n roll music exclusively! I tried liking jazz for a while, but it never really hit me for some reason. I got the new Tal album and I seem to like more modern jazz than the classics. Also, I have like 20 funk albums, but I probably listen to them sparingly now. And as far as rap goes, I pretty much like Tribe and De La and that's basically it. The only genre that has stuck a bit is alt country, but deep down, Tupelo and Whiskeytown are basically country rock bands, ya know?

So, that leaves me with my old standby, good ol rock n roll! Even within these confines, there is more than plenty out there. I mean, Bridge over Troubled Waters is pop song, but still rooted in rock music.

Just wanted to know if anybody else out there came to this realization and is ok with it.

I would say I like to listen to other stuff on the radio but my cd collection is almost exclusively in the rock realm (half metal, half everything else). I don't know any jazz artists but sometimes I turn the radio to the jazz station and listen. Same with county, I'll watch CMT for a bit or listen to a country station, but outside of the Dixie Chicks (great until the last album) and Mindy Smith (unbelievable) I don't have any country albums.

I`m definantly pretty rock based myself, but I basically like anything that has a decent beat, sounds good, and I can respect from a musicianship level.

Having said that... I will admit I do have a soft spot for 80`s pop music. Something about the cheese factor just puts me in a good mood no matter how bad I`m feeling, and that`s something nice to have on a rainy day =)

I'm rock based as well, but I branch out from everything including 80's pop, blues, jazz, classical... there's a lot of everything in my collection.

I don't like names for genre's, they're only there to sell stuff. I listen to Duke Ellington music. Duke, when asked whether he considered his music to be jazz replied "There are only two kinds of music, music that sounds good and whatever you want to call that other stuff."

My whole life I've listened to and liked a lot of stuff. Real country music (Merle Haggard, Ray Price, Buck Owens), country-rock (Bernie Leadon era Eagles, Byrds, Poco, Buffalo Springfield, Emmylou Harris, etc.), folk (Joan Baez, Peter/Paul/Mary, John Denver before he became annoying, Dylan, etc.), blues (Robert Johnson, The Kings, Son House, Howlin' Wolf, Muddy et. al.), jazz (Miles, Weather Report, Oscar Peterson, Dizzy, Duke, Ella Fitzgerald), etc. Funk, R'n'B, soul- All that Motown, Stax, Al Green, Sharon Jones/Dap Kings, stuff is perfect. I love the Jefferson Airplane and Hot Tuna, as well as "American Beauty" era Dead. Toss in Little Feat, Jethro Tull, Randy Travis, The Flecktones, New Grass Revival, etc.

My favorite music though is the stuff at the borders- Eva Cassady, Bonnie Raitt, Buffalo Springfield, Byrds, Allman Bros. (see, I love the ABB, but despise the superficially similar but totally missing the point bands like Molly Hatchet and Skynyrd). I'm drawn to good songwriters- Paul Simon, Lennon/McCartney, Holland/Dozier/Holland, Neil Young, James Taylor, Rodney Crowell, Willie Nelson, etc.

Heck I don't really like most rock music I've found. Other than The Who I find most rock bands to be really bad songwriters. The Stones did a few good songs, Zep's pretty highly over-rated IMO, and the rest of classic rock just kind of serves as musical wallpaper, but not something to actually LISTEN to for me.

At some point most people stop seeking out new music and their listening is frozen, generally on the stuff they listened to in high school and college. And at that point they don't investigate new artists, and only find new music when they stumble upon a band or artist that sounds very similar to the music they already listen to.

It's understandable. Life becomes more complex as we get older and there just isn't the time or motivation to discover new music. It takes a real effort. And often people's tastes become fixed/narrowed and they have a hard time accepting something that is really new to them.

Nothing wrong with any of it. Personally, music is such a big part of my life that I can't imagine ever not looking for and enjoying new stuff. For me I go through phases. I'm not big on genres, but since I generally find one band through another in a similar vein I could say that over the last two years or so I've had phases where I intently listened to: kraut rock, dub, post-rock, bebop, drum & bass etc.

But that's my preference. If you've found what you love most then listen to it to your heart's content. The point of music is to enjoy it.

I can listen to & enjoy almost any kind of music with the exception of Broadway Show tunes, they usually sound really corny to me. I made a conscious decision as a young player to not be limited musically by my own preferences. As a consequence I was forced to widen my tastes. I'll listen to just about anything & it drives my wife crazy. I counted it as a personal victory when I caught her tuning into a Bluegrass show on public radio.

I'll just say ditto to Snake's post. We have similar tastes. I think there are more ppl on TB that are like the OP than we can count, not that there is anything wrong with liking one genre. Funny thing is, if you look closely, you can tell the influence by the advice they give on gear and other things.

i guess i should ad that my changer has mostly Monster Magnet, Sabbath, Sleep, Yob, Orange Goblin, Kyuss, and Pelican loaded....lol (driving music)

but my MP3 player is loaded with everything and set on random....i use this to work out, mow etc....

oh and Dr. Funkdamental...

I'm of the mind that just about any gear can be tweaked to be used in any Genre...(though some are better than others for certain sounds)
