its some plastic with a wood grain. The base is solid he shaped and sanded it to cradle the basses

VERY nice indeed. Add some adhesive felt (or velvet, or whatever) around the neck cutouts and some on the bottom to protect the basses' finish, and you'll have the whole package.

If you feel inclined to take some measurements so those of us with a woodworking jones could experiment with a similar idea, feel free to share them!
