My other band

I play in an acoustic-electric group called "The Surreal McCoys." The band consists of acoustic guitar, mandolin/fiddle/banjo, bass, and percussion. Attached is a shot of the group as we played on "The Harriot II," a faux paddle wheel river boat based in Montgomery.

Also attached is a pic of the mini drumkit I built just for this group. I wanted something that would fit in (and not overpower everything.) The kick is a 16'' floor tom with a 4'' hole cut for mic'ing. I use a DW kick pedal with the beater cam reversed so the it strikes the bottom head of the floor tom. Both cymbals (14'' thin crash and 16'' light ride) are mounted to the tom via floor tom leg mounts and threaded "Z" rods. The snare is a no name 13'' brass shell piccolo. I use 10'' HH cymbals. Everything was purchased used and I have about $250.00 in it.

Acoustically, the kick doesn't have a lot of low end. But when mic'd up it is impressive.

^^ Ingenious! And I love the name! Do you miss the full kit? (I know, "not at load-out time")

Since there is not much to swing at, you have to play ecomically and think about how you will change recognizeable fills to go with so few pieces. It's a lot of fun though. We play anything from Motown stuff to Newgrass Revival. Tear down is breeze and everything fits in the truck of my car.
