Question My strap is killing my neck...

Sign in to disble this ad
I was wondering if there was anyway I could stop the strap from murdering my neck. I've got a Fender Squier Precision Bass and, being my first (and being a rental), I don't know if it's supposed to hurt or not. I'm using just a regular guitar strap. Anyway, should I just suck it up, or get a different strap?

Should not hurt. I've had this happen and could not understand why. I would go get another strap asap and give away or throw away the current one. I always use Fender "vintage" style straps and have 4 extras from selling basses and the buyer not wanting the strap. I currently use an early 70's Fender strap and it's very comfortable. Hope that helps.

For me, I did not need a padded strap as much as I needed a wider strap to get comfy. My advice is to look for one that is around 4" wide.
The first strap that I got that was really comfortable for extended periods of playing was the 3" wide from Planet Waves. Can be had for under 20 clams if you look around online although I recently learned (right here on TB!) that a 10 dollar strap and a old sock for padding also works.
I use an Italia 4" now and it is perfect, for me. As you are "renting" your bass, investing a bunch-o-dough in a strap might not be a good idea.

Go for a nice thick moody strap. They're expensive but you'll never look back.

I use Franklin Leather for my guitar and bass. Double layer of soft leather in the appropriate width for the instrument in question. $50.00 for a bass strap and worth every penny.

If you're looking for leather, Perri's has about the best bang-for-your-buck strap on the market.

I haven't tried the Neotech straps, so I can't make a fair comparison between the two. But as far as leather or suede straps go, this thing is amazing.

Sounds like you should give the wider strap a shot. I use $2 nylon straps and they always bug me, but used to 'em after so many years. My bro plays guitar and has a really wide expensive strap and it feels heavenly when I have to teach him his parts.

I'm thinking about getting a Mono Betty. They look solid - the Moody's look cool, but pricey and the comfort strapp was a little too bulky.

FWIW I'm ok w/ my 2" Planet Waves strap but if I play a lot it starts to hurt. I imagine that'll get worse w/ age . . .

I used to have the same problem.
i think u should try another strap, sth wider.
I'm using a DiMarzio clip lock 3inches and obviously my neck gets better.

Hit the gym...the stronger you get, the lighter your bass will feel. I've become strong from lifting heavy and barely even notice the weight of my bass.
