What got me hooked on the Blues? The Blues Brothers lead me into the world of blues where i found sooo much good stuff. Check out:

Clapton (as you already have, good man)
Cream
Hendrix's earlier work
BB King
Buddy Guy
John Lee Hooker
Junior Wells
"Duck" Dunn
Stax Records (most of what they released was great)
Stevie Ray Vaughn (sp?)
Stevie Wonder
Ray Charles

And for some newer stuff:
Blues Traveler
Jonny Lang (tho i dont like his new album)

Here is a Blues Traveler song i cant get out my head right now :

You can tour a bunch of different styles on an "Alberts and Kings" theme, and learn a bunch

Albert Collins
Albert King
BB King
Freddie King

Also check out T-Bone Walker and Robert Johson for some great early bluesmen.

If you like acoustic blues, add Lightin' Hopkins. For country blues harp, Sonny Terry and Brownie McGee.

Bonnie Rait is a seriously underrated blues player. Most of her recent stuff has been more pop. but that woman can play the blues!...

Great suggestions. I might add to them the following:

Slide guitar man Elmore James,

and then
Mississippi John Hurt
Reverend Gary Davis

both fingerpickin' blues players, old style, like Lightnin Hopkins but different...

Sue Foley, Derek Trucks, Duke Robillard, Roomful of Blues, for some newer stuff,

Early British, like Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac and his solo stuff, and Savoy Brown and Kim Simmond's solo stuff. Beautifully done blues, Brit style. Don't forget John Mayall, too. All are contemporaries of Clapton and excellent players.

quickie link to recent Savoy Brown performance http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QPgcQydWWeE

Jimmy Rogers,
Michael Bloomfield,
Hot Tuna,
Johnny Winter,
Jeff Beck's TRUTH,

That'll get ya started, in addition to the other posts.....

I thought it was just me. His new album is bordering on terrible, IMO.

I generally don't care much for the blues (which is odd, because I make my living playing for a guy who has a predominantly bluesy style), but I recently discovered a guy named C.C. Adcock. Simply bad ass. Drum machines, bluesy guitars, and lo-fi recording quality - awesome!

I consider Cale to be more "roots rock" and Clapton's more of a "follower" - adapting blues to Rock 'n' Roll.

Here's a couple more names:

Robert Cray Band

Robert Randolph & The Family Band (I have *N-E-V-E-R* heard pedal-steel played like Randolph plays).

You need to have at least one Rory Gallagher and one Johnny Winter in your collection.

Albert Collins always has some really great bass playing on his CD's.

I think these were posted somewhere else on TB and whoever posted them, thanks, but they're so truly great they're worth posting again.
