Most of my performing these days happens only in my own imagination. But I find myself paired up with some excellent musicians! It's fun, when I listen to "Armageddon Blues" for the 500th time, to envision that it's me, not Gary Willis, ripping that amazing solo. The crowd adores, my bandmates appreciate, and all is good.
So, what "dream bandmates" would you like to surround yourself with in order to create your optimal live performance or recording project? Here are a few of my ideas:
Drums: Dennis Chambers or (the late great) Tony Thompson
Guitar: Steve Topping or Dominic Miller
Keys: Bernie Worrell or Joe Jackson
Horns: Maceo Parker, Branford Marsalis, or Roy Hargrove
...plus me on bass. I wonder what sort of musical soup that mix would create. Probably a couple too many egos, but it is, after all, only a dream. I'm not sure about vocals, I thought about it for a while and didn't have any really strong thoughts.
Any other dream bands? |

That's it. Power trio. I might have gone for a larger band in my younger days, but I'm 46, my back hurts if I overdo it anymore.
