Need info on turntables

Recently, for some unknown reason, indy bands are releasing EPs on vinyl and only vinyl. Makes no sense to me, but whatever.

Anyways, to play these I am now looking at getting a turntable. I asked my dad about it, but being the audiophile he is he went ona rant of sorts telling about about getting a good cartrage, balancing the head, if you get a cheap on your records will be destroyed blah blah . He told me the cheapest I could get would be 500$. Yeah hes crazy.

So I come to you guys. Give me some suggestions on the cheapest turntable and all accessories (besides speakers, I have that covered) that will sound decent. The only thing thats really important is that my records dont get distroyed after a few listens.

On a side note I have a lefty MIM Fender Jazz I would be willing to trade for a turntable if anyone is interested.

Well, in my experience, the most famous turntable is the Technics SL-1200MK2. It is extremely reliable and not as expensive as this one, for instance (first item in the list).

As for cartridges, a Stanton is a good choice.

A good, used turntable doesn't need to be expensive. I see them at garage sales often. The last one I bought was $7.00 at a thrift shop, for a Technics SL-DD33. I also have a $10.00 Scott PS-87A, a garage sale find. I use them both.

Both have sensitive tone arms and direct drive, not near top of the line, but not cheapo kiddie models either. Cartridges and styluses are readily available.

I recommend direct drive. Don't get an old belt drive model. The belts are getting harder to find.

The SL1200 is a fine deck for DJs, but for just listening to records, there are better choices in its price range.
