Lately, I've been getting into the mellow 60's hippy rock, like The Zombies, the Mamas & The Papas, stuff like that.
I'm in the midst of burning a CD of good mellow stuff like that. So far it consists of The Zombies' entire album "Oddesey and Oracle", and a few other tracks. But since all these songs are only like 2-3 minutes long I still have a bunch of free space on the disc.
Just wondering if you guys could name some really good music from that genre. Doesn't have to be the Zombies, but if it is just pick something from a different album cause I probably haven't heard it.

The songs are quite beautiful, and you get the bonus of Jack Casady playing bass. Here are a few classics: It's No Secret, The Other Side of This Life, The Ballad of You and Me and Pooneil, Comin' Back to Me, Good Shepherd, Wooden Ships, Triad, and the instrumental Embryonic Journey. Many of their other tunes are less mellow, but are pretty killer too IMHO.
Then move along to the Byrds, assuming you don't mind a little twang with your hippy. Look for the early albums when David Crosby was still in the band for starters. |

More
Obscured By Clouds
Meddle
Piper At The Gates Of Dawn
A Saucerful Of Secrets
Atom Heart Mother

| | Yeah, I've got the moves like Jagger. | | Join Date: Oct 2006 Location: G.R. MI | | | The Dukes of Stratosphere! I forget what band they once were, but as the Dukes they were way psychedelic! They were so very cliche' (I believe that was their whole point) but they did it oh so well!!
Check out Klaatu (the Canadian Beatles!) They caused quite a stir in the states as everyone thought they were the Beatles un-broken up.
Maybe Brian Auger's Oblivion Express??

They released two albums (which they later combined into one CD). It does have a throwback vibe to it. Good stuff. Was recorded while they were on tour with The Tubes on borrowed equipment from them.
Don't think Dukes really qualifies for what he's looking for, but he should still check it out. Good stuff.
My 2 cents:
Grateful Dead
Allman Bros
Grand Funk Railroad
Credence Clearwater Revival
Santana
Bob Dylan (Live in 1966)
The Beatles
Jimi Hendrix

| | Well, thats like your opinion. Man... | | Join Date: Mar 2004 Location: Fife, Scotland | | New Fast Automatic Daffodils. I think they might have been 80's or 90's but were really retro. Maybe the same idea as the Dukes of Stratosphere mentioned in the last post
Definately have the hippy name and sound anyway

MakiSupaStar- That stuff was a little more rock then I'm looking for. All great artists, but I've been listening to them for years. I'm more interested in the mid-60's San Francisco acid music.

Quicksilver Messenger Service
Country Joe and the Fish
All have some cool, mellower tunes and were bona fide Bay Area tripsters. Start with the Airplane stuff though, it's the goods. |

Reminds me of sitting in the backseat of my parents Buick Vista Cruiser with the smell of vinyl and listening to the my mom's "soft hits" station. Stony stuff. |

But for the mellower stuff, try It's A Beautiful Day. Their album Marrying Maiden is really pretty. |

i would also say seeking out the nuggets four disc cd compiliation (a re-release and expansion on the original nuggets double lp released in the 70s) is a great way to get a sense of the great garage one hit wonders of the early psych era.
jefferson airplane "surrealistic pillow" as mentioned above is great, too.
a little bit later, but i'd recommend "ege bamyasi" or "future days" by can from the 70s.
"odessey and oracle" is truly a great album... something by the move, like "shazaam," might be up your alley, too. a little more bizarre, but very good songcraft.
all most forgot, definitely check out the kinks "village green preservation society," "something else by the kinks," and "arthur"... all great pop albums from the late 60s.
funny story, i didn't start liking 60s music until after i stopped doing drugs
