Need oppinion's on a trade-in situation.

Howdy everyone,

This is my first official post; I've been viewing the forums for about a year now gathering information but for some reason haven't dove full in. Might as well start sometime! Might as well be now.

So anyhow, I'd first like to say that if this is in the wrong forum I apologize, I'm still getting used to how forums work. I also apologize if I go into too much detail; I tend to write novels for some reason. On to my dilemma:

Currently I have a Schecter Omen-5 that I'm playing through a GK 700rb-ii head, a GK Backline 410blx, and I have a Beringer Autocom compressor in the mix. I stick mostly to rock and metal, but my playing style almost borderlines on funk with a lot of extra percussive notes and muted rhythms laid in.

I love my bass, I love my amp.... I hate my cab. The cab doesn't push the full power of the head, and when I try to boost it past the main volume (with the added boost feature) it gets EXTREMELY distorted (Also for those of you who are familiar with the Omen-5, I have the Bass set low on the preamp since that causes a lot of distortion on its own). I know that’s partially the point of the boost feature, but I've heard 4ohm cabs running w/ the 700rb-ii and the boost almost cranked and it still sounds pleasant to my ears anyhow.

So I decided it would be in my best interest to start shopping around for cabs. I'm low on budget right now (have a few bills, and a wedding coming up that I need to pay for), which is limiting my options. I went up to my local Music Go Round and found a really old beat up Ampeg ISOVENT up there that looked really interesting, and it meets my requirements (600w @ 4 ohms). I haven't actually played with the cab yet because I wanted to use my head specifically and they didn't have a 700rb up there, but after doing lots of online research this sounds like it may just be the cab I'm looking for at the moment. The price on the cab is sitting at $349.99 but it’s been up there since November so I can probably knock them down to $300.00.

So now that you have all the back history, the point of this dilemma is this: I want to do some trades to get this cab if it ends up sounding as good as the net says it will. What I have for possible trade is as follows:

Peavey Foundation 2000 Fretless bass. (Not sure on year, info is at home)
A Peavey (Megabox??) cab with 2x8 speakers and 1x18 (originally was a 15).
A 150w Spider II half stack in near mint condition.

I figure I can get around $100 for the Foundation, around $100 for the Peavey cab, and I'm hoping I can squeak out between $250 and $300 for the half stack. I use the Foundation on occasions when I want that raw/warm passive sound, I NEVER use the Peavey cab anymore (lows do not sound great), and the half stack I use on occasions but its mostly a backup for if my Marshall breaks down or I have another guitarist in need. I'd say the one I hate to lose most is the stack, but it’s also got the right price to get me my new cab. So what do you think I should do?

Trade the Peavey Cab and the Stack?
Trade the Bass and the Stack?
Trade the Peavey Cab and the Bass and save up some cash to make up the difference (might take awhile with my budget constraints).

I'm in a band right now that should start gigging in the next month or so, so I can’t sit on this for too long. What would you all do in this situation?

Thanks for your time!

First of all, if I lived anywhere near you, I would walk in there and buy it out from under you. Seriously, I owned one of those cabs for a while and it sounded GREAT! Can't remember why I got rid of it.
But I think your trade-in decision will be made by THEM, and not you. They may not be in the mood for a straight trade. They may insist on at least SOME cash. I would ask them if they are even interested in a straight trade first. They will probably answer with "Well, whadaya got?". At that point, I would start with my least favorite/necessary gear and go up from there. Good luck! Awsome cab!

Good point on the trade in troubles. I'm pretty confident I can get them to to take a straight up trade from me (I've probably spent close to $10k with them over the years and I know the owners pretty well, in fact they took it off the floor for me without even having to say please). Good to hear another +1 to the Isovent cab, I've only seen a handful of negative responses to it so far so thats getting me even more anxious to run and grab it!

The amazing thing about them is that they sound EXACTLY the same in the BACK of the room as they do 10 feet in front of them. I owned that cab while I was the house bass player for an open mic blues night, so I got to hear it played by a LOT of other guys over the years. Don't want to derail your post. Good luck with the trade!

If it were me, I would do the Mega Box and the Spider II. You already hate the Mega Box. And you can always find good used little combos for a backup guitar amp. Stick a SM57 in front of it and noone will know but you!

Add a question since you brought it up: So would you say that it's an easier cabinet to hear yourself on as compared to other cabs? I don't know about most bass players but I always have a heck of a time hearing myself over the mix when I'm anywhere near my cab. I know the reason for this is because of the wave lengths and such, but would be really killer if this cab would help that problem too!

Not really supposed to be giving pricing suggestions unless the thread starter is a Supporting Member... see the FAQ's for each forum for why, when, and because.

Keep the bass, trade the amps. OR sell them outright ( probably get more) and buy the cab.
