Need some guidance- How do I get Justin Chancellor's tone?

Sign in to disble this ad
I need an education. I would like to know how Justin Chancellor gets his sound. You know the clang/ching when the pick attack's the string, and then the bottom end that goe's with it. It almost sounds like a little overdrive, or mild distortion mixed in. The sound of his bass for example in the song The Pot. Any advice is appreciated

mild overdrive/distortion.

I get a similar effect...

P-bass -> boss LS-2 -> loop A: Wah pedal, fully depressed for mid-scoop, -> bass eq

loop B: dry signal

-> MXR noise gate/direct box

Boost your high mids a fair amount and boost your treble just a little, then add a little overdrive. He also plays with a pick which might help, but you can get his tone with your fingers if you play down near the bridge. His tone is very good, but its not that hard to achieve. A lot of people think that you need a Wal like he has to get that tone, but you really don't. Just use the EQ on your amp judiciously and you should be able to get pretty close.

You donīt really NEED a wal...but it would help a LOT, since that bass is the back bone of his sound, now, that Precision idea.....i donīt think so.

^^^ That should have been the subject line of your thread. Short, to the point, and tells everyoneone what it is you want to know. Saying "I am in need of some guidance" is extremely vague and won't benefit anyone in the future who searches the forum looking for an answer to the same question.

It does an alright impression. There's no substitution for a Wal, but a P bass with the right EQ can get a similar sound. Nail it? No, but probably the best alternative to the rarest of Wals.
