Need some new "dance friendly" songs in the set

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm playing a weddin last weekend and we're hitting them with songs the girls can dance to. We're typically a bar band. Doing almost all covers of stuff the crowd would all know. So we are hitting them with stuff like:

Brown-eyed girl
867-5309
Listen to the Music
I want you to want me
Blister in the sun
What I like about you
Hurt so good

and a few others... and then, we're out of those type songs. Done. Back to stuff that's good.. and they sing to.. but not really dance type stuff.

So, all you cover guys... what do you keep them dancing with? How do you get the ladies to stay with you on the dance floor?

Thanks, brothas

I just make sure there's a slow tune in every once in a while to change the dynamics. People can't be "up" all the time. Higher powered songs lose their effect with nothing to compare them to.

We've got some of those too. I agree, you gotta change it up sometimes. We're just looking for new song ideas. I thought I might be able to get some good ones from my fellow TBers.

Yep. Those would work.

If you're gonna go with the Cliche stuff:

Sweet Home Alabama usually gets them up.

One that I think works really well, at least from my experience is:

Paul Simon: You Can Call Me Al

It's got a killer bass line and a bass solo. What more can you ask for in a song as a bass player

Some others:

Jumpin' Jack Flash
Brown Sugar
Shakedown Street (if you go some dead fans)

Listen to the song "Bad Things" by Jace Everett, its the title song to the TV Show True Blood. Its got simple chord progression with a country/blue shuffle to it. Kind of short at around 3 minutes, but plenty of space to stretch it out with no problem.

Played a private party recently.... the young ladies *asked* for Mustang Sally..... although by young I mean late teens, early 20s.

"Folsom Prison Blues" and "Old Time Rock and Roll" go over very well with a younger crowd.... go figure.

They also asked for "Save a horse, ride a cowboy".

Punter at a gig: "Can you guys play Mustang Sally?"
Our tenor sax player: "Just **** off, mate."

One number we play that nearly always seems to fill the dance floor - Young Hearts Run Free.

If you don't mind some of the better disco, "She Works Hard For The Money" usually goes over pretty well.

We don't mind disco.. Anything that works will do. I'd prefer stuff that's a little out there for this band. Something they wouldn't expect. The guitarist wants to do the first Black Eyed Peas single off their new album. I think it would be hilarious and would work.

Thanks for the ideas though.. Keep em coming please.

This is in our set every night. Not my favorite, but fun and a crowd favorite.

Ladies - young and old like Mustang Sally so you need to play it - tired and overplayed as it is. We also do FPB and I am always amazed at who likes it.

I'm thinking about a rocked up version of Billie jean. We used to do Bust A Move and Funky Cold Medina.. Those went over HUGE.

Any other suggestions?
