I am attending a clinic hosted by him later this month, but cant decide on what I want to play. For the longest time I was settled on teen town by jaco, but I realized with all the pauses and stops that it would sound weird without a backing band. What is a piece along the same skill level that wouldn't be too hard to ear? Thanks. |

Something of your own would be even better, IMHO.

Or even, just groove.
I'm sure a guy like John has seen EVERYTHING, and would be more impressed if a bass player could lay down a solid groove and say what he has to say.

I went to WootCamp in 2002, and each one of us had to get up there and 'introduce ourselves on the bass' on the 1st or 2nd day. Fortunately, I had some time to think about it, and since we were in the middle of east Egypt in the hills of Tennessee, I decided to play 'Green Acres'.
It got a big laugh, and a lot of people were singing along!! |

That means no Jaco. Maybe an electric version of one of Miroslav Vitous solos on an early Weather Report CD. Maybe Cucumber Slumber, Alphonso Johnsons solo from Mysterious Traveller.
The Bebop tune rec is a good idea. I mean if you are learning Jaco stuff like Tracy, etc...you should be learning bebop, for that is at the root of Jacos playing. |

Not hard to play, but hard to play fast and well.
