Need to vent (GC content)

Up until now I've been generally ok with Guitar Center. Competitive prices and a location 10 mins from my home.
I keep hearing about these new Fender blacktop basses, got on the Fender website and thought the P bass model look good and wanted to test drive it.
I went to Guitar Center today thinking they'd probably have it by now 'cause they've been out for a while.
Got to GC and didn't see any hanging on the wall, so I asked an associate if and when they'd be getting them in. The dude seemed to have little to no clue what I was talking about.
Funny thing was, I found GC had the new '69 thinline tele's and the new pawn shop guitar.
I've stories about GC being lame, but now I've experienced the lameness myself.

...so the problem here is that they didn't have something in stock?

The blacktops have been announced, and within the last few days shown up on the Fender site, but it's likely they're not going to be readily availible until after NAMM.

I was under the impression the blacktop basses were just released. I know I didn't hear about them until this past week. The blacktop guitars were released last fall, and my local GC has several of them (though as of this weekend has one less since I bought one), so just be patient and I'm sure they'll get them in before too long.

The blacktop basses only went up on gcs site last week. And it says there's only 30 in stock. They have 217 stores. I wouldn't be mad at them id be mad at fender or gcs supplier. if you want to test drive it so bad then maybe order it and take advantage of there 30 day return policy?

Be mad at yourself for thinking there was enough blacktops out for all the gc stores. I'm ok with guitar center I never buy strings there but ill get a used bass there.

I'm no fan of Guitar Center, but it seems that lately some TalkBassers are looking for the tiniest excuses to complain about them.

That's not at all unusual about GC....I remember when the Ampeg Heritage gear first came out...went to my local GC (a bunch of good guys) and they hadn't heard of it...the store manager pulled it up on the computer and said "Hmmm, I'll be damned"

Sometimes things take a while to filter down.....they'll be there soon enough.

As a counterpoint, I just went to my local GC and not only did they have a nice cymbal bag (for my son), but it was on sale. I bought it.

Damn you, GC!!!

Today I went to my local mom and pop guitar store and asked about the Fender Blacktop line. Turns out they had all the guitar and basses in stock and on sale. Not only that, but the store employees knew the names of every Fender employee involved in the building process, and knew their kids names, too. They then brought me in the back room and gave me an elaborate 3-D virtual tour of the Fender factory. Afterward, they had open bar and complimentary massages. It was pretty kewl.

I hear you bro! I went to a guitar center, and asked for an original 1959 Fender bass. Those good fer' nothing bastards didn't have one in stock. Cost me about 70 cents gas money.

Allways call a store to find out if they have a item wanted in stock. Saves one a wasted drive time and gas. Those basses are too new to be in most stores yet. Theres been times when GC website says the store by me has an item in stock when I check for stores by zipcode, but when phone called to verify, they dont have it.
