Hey folks. I'm looking to do a major overhaul on our band's website...I want to quit using godaddy.com's rather weak standard layoust, and use some that my wife created. Can someone explain to me how to upload your own website onto a domain hosted by godaddy? I can't figure it out on their website (I've been using their own built-in "Website Tonight" function).
Thanks in advance...I really want to get rolling on this.

Luckily, I have a friend who is graciously hosting my site (which doesn't get a lot of traffic, anyway) but I imagine that you wouldn't have to use their web-page software if you are being hosted by them. I know someone more knowledgeable about this stuff will time in, though.

No complaints about either. |

Your logon in WS_FTP (or any of a number of other FTP programs) will be your website (host name) and the user name and password for your GoDaddy account.
Once you're logged on, you will see a window that is split down the center. On one side is your computer, the other is their computer (the internet). You just drag & drop your files on to their side and they're uploaded.
It sounds a lot harder than it is. |

You want to log in to the control panel of your domain, which you can do from the "my domains" window on Godaddy. From there, set up a primary FTP user (it may already be set up with your username, but check to be sure), and create a new password for that name. It can take them up to an hour or so to get your name and password squared away in their system, so take a break right after changing the password. Then, use any FTP program (I like Fetch and Bulletproof) and log in through the FTP program, using the domain name, your primary FTP user name, and your new password. It will open up a windows-style series of folders containing all the data of your site. The main page, the one that shows up when somebody first comes to your domain, is titled "index". You can change almost any other page or folder name, but that front page has to be named "index". That should get you started! | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
