Neoclassical Rock and Metal, Authentic?

Sign in to disble this ad
Most people know that Neoclassicism is an element in late romantic and modern era classical music which was a kind of whole return to tonality movement. But Neoclassical rock and Neoclassical metal is a subgenre of rock and metal that displays elements of classical music often quoting pieces from composers. But this seems more pretentious now than ever. The early classical trained musicians who later became rock musicians had a less pseudo-intellectual, and more authentic neoclassical style, like Ritchie Blackmore, and Randy Rhoads. But then as progressive music became more popular, people like Yngwie Malmsteen got famous for their 'shredding' and their neoclassical style. This whole neoclassical thing became what Yngwie was famous for and may have been what shaped his persona. And while Yngwie has been cited saying his influences are "Eddie Van Halen, Van Halen, Randy Rhoads, Jimi Hendrix, Ritchie Blackmore, Rush, Rainbow, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Jeff Beck" he is also quoted saying "Classical was the peak of the musical history of man. Music hasn't developed since classical music; it stopped being creative." Now most people who truly do listen to classical music, will agree that classical music is just as great as ever, you can look at Aaron Copland, Gershwin, and others and see that their music is very creative avante garde and ground breaking the most composers from the Classical and Baroque period. There is only one word about modern classical music that I need to bring up as far as creative genius, Stravinsky. Even today there is still amazing music being made especially in movies and television. But the far most inauthentic and hypocritical action is that he plays rock music on an electric guitar. And most classical music fans say they do not hear a true Paganini influence in Yngwie. I find it hard to believe he truly is a fan of certain composers yet has never played a piece that was Adagio. But this is not a thread to bash Yngwie, this is to show the pretentious neoclassical mindset created. So whenever you hear many neoclassical musicians you'll often hear a quote of a theme by either Mozart, Bach, Vivaldi, or Paganini. I myself have never even heard a Haydn piece quoted, which makes me question the authenticity. Hell, it's hard to find a neoclassical song that's not in some minor key.

What caused me to write this was the confusion when I went to the wikipedia page on it

Do you see anything wrong here

Baroque

* Tomaso Giovanni Albinoni
* Johann Sebastian Bach
* Johann Pachelbel
* Antonio Lucio Vivaldi
* Paganini

Classical

* Joseph Haydn
* Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
* Ludwig van Beethoven

Romantic

* Frederic Chopin
* Ludwig van Beethoven
* Niccolò Paganini

And to clarify:
Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying all neoclassical musicians and bands are inauthentic or that I hate neoclassical music. I love neoclassical music, but I feel most neoclassical musicians are inauthentic and have no deep knowledge of classical music. I am a big fan of Warmen especially their songs based off Salieri's music. And I do not consider myself a true listener of Classical music. I do enjoy some Yngwie songs.
I guess what I am trying to say is do you guys find the neoclassical rock movement legit or pretentious?
comments?

It wouldn't be totally off the mark to categorize some of Beethoven's later work as romantic.

As far as "neoclassical rock" music, it honestly just sounds like really fast harmonic minor scales. Not a whole lot more to it. It sure can be fun to listen to sometimes, but it's no deeper than Winger. It's probably shallower, at times.

I know but if you were on who wants to be a millionaire and they asked you if he was romantic or classical, you would say classical. Plus he wasn't in the romantic era, but I know exactly what you mean. But to list Paganini as Baroque is just down right ignorant.

But your last description is pretty accurate. I love some neoclassical music but I'm sure it's more pretending than really being classically influenced.

I don't think Christopher Parkening has anything to worry about.

I don't understand why people try to mark eras in arts like if they changed from one day to the other...

Beethoven was indeed part of the romantic era. The classic era was actually very VERY short.

In any book you read he will be considered Classical, any CD, anything. I think whether or not beethoven was romantic is really aside the point.
