Never thought I'd say it, but...

Saw Poison and Motley Crue in concert tonight, and Poison was actually good. Great sound, high energy, Bret sounded good....never thought I'd compliment Poison, but they did a good job.

As far as the Crue*, they were awesome. I've seen them now 5 times, and they still bring it as far as a live show. First concert I've ever been to was Motley Crue in '89 as a 13 year old, and I was completely blown away. Opening song then was Shout at the Devil, the show was indoors; the song opened with huge pyrotechnics, and bras being thrown on the stage as they rose up from platforms in the stage with Pentagram lights roaming the walls of the arena. Tommy Lee's drum solo consisted of him being in a cage that was suspended in air, way above the stage, pushed out above the first few rows of the crowd while it spun upside down. I left that show thinking, "wow, concerts are really awesome."

Seen probably 75 bands since, and learned quickly that a lot of bands just don't know how to put on a spectacle like these guys do(although there's obviously much more talented musicians I've seen). This was my 5th time seeing them, they had a very good tour in '05 for Carnival of Sins, which was damn good, couple mediocre ones too, where Vince was fat, the show was decent but nothing great....tonight thought, they brought it. Most bands simply don't put on a show like this anymore. I'm still wondering if they hook Vince up to AutoTune, but he looked good and kept it high energy as a frontman. Tommy's "Roller Coaster" drum solo brought back that sh!t eating grin I had as a 13 year old seeing them for the first time(look up his new drum solo if you don't know what this is...unreal). Nikki's running around spitting blood(water) on fans in the first few rows. They have stripper-looking broads dancing/doing backups. Pyros, lights, smoke....Just sick.

*I'm a crue fanboy, that's my disclaimer...but even still, I'm a huge "live music" fan first, and I left very impressed! Probably helps I had really good seats too.

Anyone else seen them on this tour? Thoughts?

I, personally, would rather see a decent band put on a killer show than a virtuoso-ish band put on a poor show. Two examples were two I saw last year; Dream Theatre and Joan Jett (Not a big fan of her, personally). DT, of course, was sonically pleasing. I love their music. But there wasn't much of a "show". Rudess was the one who moved around the most - by far. Joan Jett and her band though just had huge on stage energy and made the show a lot more enjoyable.

I prefer the opposite. The best concert (I like concerts, not shows) I ever heard (it's music; I go to hear, not see) was Larry Carlton and Robben Ford. Wait-the Dave Holland Quintet. I mean Phil Woods. You get my point. YMMV

My VERY first concert was Motley Crue, opened by Faster Pussycat. I fell in love. First time I smelled weed. I was offered it but refused. I was 13 or 14.....Shout at the Devil was awesome.

The whole AutoTune point is valid to bring up. I've heard that Howard Jones from Killswitch uses it

Never been a huge Crue fan (though I will admit Tommy Lee seriously brings it as a drummer)... but the fact that Mick Mars can even make it up on stage anymore is a minor miracle. Much less play the shows. That medical condition he has is some serious sh*t.

From my seat, Vince's voice definitely wasn't overpowering, and sounded like he's in falsetto for most of it...he also "tails off" a lot of the vocals or skips them. He's 50 and those vocals when recorded were way high. At least he's not lip syncing!

I have a soft spot for 1980's Crue, and saw them in late 1989 on the Dr. Feelgood tour. I didn't expect much for some reason, but was blown away by the show. They were air tight, and completely kicked ass. I was especially impressed by Mick Mars. He had never been one of my favorite guitarists, but on stage he was thoroughly impressive. Good to hear they can still bring it.

Say want you want about Nikki or Vince, but Tommy Lee makes that band.

His time and groove were (and still are) light years ahead of pretty much any other drummer from that 80s hair band era. That's the major reason their shows sound so good and a big reason they're still packing arenas when a lot of their competitors from that era are now playing county fairs with one original member.
