New bass is heavy, causing pain. Comfort Strapp? Other suggestions?

My neck/back were giving me some "discomfort" so I've been going to the chiropractor for the last 4 months or so. Back is feeling great.

Two weeks ago I get a Modulus Q5 and now I am hurting again. The bass is much heavier than I remember. If you have a heavy bass, and back issues, how have you dealt with it? Will a Comfort Strapp help? It seems people like them. Other suggestions?

I also notice my left hand hurts a little as I am used to a 34" scale bass and this is a 35" scale? I assume I'll get used to it?

Neotech is another strap similar to the Comfort Strapp... I like the looks of the Neotech better. There's also a "suspenders" type of strap in a thread on this subject over in the Basses forum.

Macho men will tell you to get used to it, but I don't give a flip what macho men say. Get a bass that's two pounds lighter and in a comfortable scale length, you'll be happier in the long run.

I'm way past caring what "macho men" will say. If it comes down to it, I will change bass. As I think back on my past basses - I know, there have been many - the comfortable one's have been 4 string, 34" scale. My Yamaha 5 string is 34" and was/is fairly comfortable to play, but lately I have been having more discomfort even playing that bass.

I like 5 strings - especially at church - but if it comes to playing without pain, I could learn to get buy with a 34" scale 4 string bass. I don't want to have pain doing something I love.

If you really want to keep the low end sound without playing a 5 string, check out a 4 string bass with a BEAD setup.

I use the comfort strapps on both of my basses (4 and 5 string) and love them. My 5'er is walnut and pretty heavy but the comfort strapp makes it feel great.

Low B isn't that big a deal to me. I use it, but I don't live down there. Just for the ends of songs and stuff.

FWIW I have two 34" scale 5-strings that are very light, one weighs 7.5 lbs and the other weighs 8 lbs. They are a Valenti and a Matt Pulcinella. The MPG has an amazingly good low B, too.

I've used the Comfort Strap for several years with my 10 lb Warwick NT 5 string Thumb Bass and have had no sore back or shoulder issues whatsoever. And that includes playing 4 hour cover gigs on Fridays AND Saturdays. I love that strap! Yes, if anything it could look a little cooler, but once you're on stage it just looks like any other black guitar strap.
Good luck!

work out ur shoudlers!!!!!!!!!! get some muscle!!!! my bass is pretty heavy. At first I hated it however, the clarity provided by this bass makes it totally worth it. I try to work out my shoulders once in a while to keep a type of cushion.

Comfort Strapps work very well. I got one to use with my 6 string since it is heavier than I am used to. The Comfort Strapp really made a difference.

Not tryin to be macho, but exercise is usually the best way to relieve chronic back pain and even numbness from compressed nerves.

I had numbness in my fretting hand while playing my Stingray and physical therapy failed to make a dent in it.

However, two weeks in crossfit - www.crossfit.com and it was GONE.

OK, I get it, I'll suck it up and see what happens. I am ordering a new strap though.

Went with the Mono strap. Looks nice - wide and padded - and not too expensive.
