OK, um, I don't know much about the genre, and wouldn't mind some recommendations of the various "greats" as well... but what I'm really interested in is current groups that got that old sound. "r&b revival" I believe is what they're calling it? Here is what peaked my interest and an example of what I'm talking about:

Charles Bradley - Lovin' You, Baby (gives me chills every time he hits that chorus)

I guess Daptone Records is the go-to for this stuff, but are there others out there that I should know about as well?

This one by Raphael Saadiq-
Amazon.com: Raphael Saadiq The Way I See It: Raphael Saadiq: Music

It's a couple years old...

Something with an old Skool vibe & a Modern touch-
The Brand New Heavies
(I just listened to their entire Live In London cd while waiting for my car to be serviced. If you like something Rufus' Stomping At The Savoy...you will also like the BNH's live album).

This. They record at Daptone Records, which is owned by the bass player for Sharon Jones and the Daptones. All analog, using the same equipment and techniques that James Brown, Marva Whitney and all of them used to use. The bass player even wrote a great article about how he uses "crappy" techniques in the studio to get that old-school sound.
