| New strategy when buying basses...

Yesterday after work I went to the local music shop to play this Fender P bass that I couldn't stop thinking about. I'm usually a boutique bass player, so I was intrigued by the fact that I liked this 4 string P bass so much.
It was right after work and I was feeling a little burned out from having a totally boring and uninspiring day. Plus I was hungry and my blood sugar was really low. Whatever it was, I could not get the magic out of this bass! Everything I played sounded like hoopty, clanky.. garbage. Then, I recognized a really good guitar player in the room and realized that if I could catch his ear I might be able to strike up a conversation with him and maybe get a new gig... But it was an uphill battle.. I just couldn't get any magic out! If I was him, I wouldn't have been very impressed either.
Then it occurred to me that usually when I go to bass shopping, I am super jazzed up and all inspired to play - and I usually end up walking out of there with something.
When I'm in the mood to squeeze good tone out of an instrument, I can make just about anything sound good enough to buy.
Conclusion: maybe i'd buy less basses if I didn't eat before going into music shops.
