Question A Night In Hell Banjo Part

Sign in to disble this ad
So... in the Stu Hamm song, Country Music (A Night in Hell)... there's that awesome banjo-sounding part... I'm wondering if that's actually an original lick, because I was at a bluegrass festival a few weeks ago, and a guy played that on a banjo... I didn't hear what he called the song, but he certainly didn't imply that it was a cover, and he didn't seem like the type who would even know who Stu Hamm was. The banjo version was actually really cool... and I'm trying to figure out if it's actually some traditional song, or if this random bluegrass banjo player is a Stu Hamm fan.... any ideas?

The song is basically a re-write of Earl Scrugg's song "Foggy Mountain Breakdown". When it's played it's traditional for every player to take a solo, and this is something Stu emulates in "Country Music" by doing slap, tap and fingerstyle solos.

There is a video-listen to Earl on the banjo at the start.

I thought he also incorporated most of the licks from "Turkey In The Straw"

I think it's funny you have to be 18 or older to watch that

I recognized Albert Lee, and Vince Gill on guitars, Steve Martin on banjo, Mark O'Connor on fiddle, and I think that's Jerry Douglas on dobro. But who is that on mandolin?

I forget occasionally that Steve Martin is a darned fine banjo player. I remember him jammimg with Glen Campbell on the Tonight Show back in about 1980. He tore it up.

It wouldn't be safe to let kids hear music that good!
