A good argument for Music Education? Isn't that like shooting fish in a barrel? I'm still waiting to hear a remotely intelligent argument against Music Education

...and if I ever do, I'll just sic Nile Rogers on 'em!

From just the tidbits I've picked up about Nile along the way, I've always had a deep respect for his quiet genius and approach to great musicianship and songwriting. Everything the man touches still sounds unlike, and somehow better than, everything around it.

I must watch this interview in its entirety.

The ironic thing is that what really sets Nile Rodgers apart from 98% of the other guitarists out there -- his amazing sense of time and "feel" -- is something you don't get from school.

Not saying music ed isn't important... just kind of interesting.

Thanks for sharing. Just saw CHIC live in Montreaux on DVD. Nile is such a blessed musician. I hope he will win his fight against cancer.

Yes, that makes his story even more remarkable.

Wha?

In all of the music lessons that I've ever taken (granted, mostly classical), my teachers have stressed time and feel. Likewise in school ensembles.

Its not good, but season 4 of The Wire lays it bare for all to see why music education in the public system is being done away with. The quest for numbers, in that case standard test scores as all resources went into teaching the test. Meanwhile the students became increasingly jaded and thus do worse and worse. And the public responds by trying to do something to increase test scores and things get worse as drop out rates rise in part out of students boredom of being taught the test for ever increasing block of time.
