Noise!

Anyone else like this stuff? Noise music that is. I just got back from a show and I don't think I'll be able to go to sleep until I babble about it. Homemade synths, nasty effects, amplifiers, and flaming garbage cans played with circular saws abounded. All the bands were good too, which is a nice treat I don't often get. Forgot my ear plugs though. Still, I don't need my hearing as much as I needed to hear that show.

The bands were Neptune, Warhammer 48K, Destructo Swarmbot, Ho-Ag, and Ghost Ice (amazing!), if those names signify to anyone. I hadn't heard of them before today.

i don't think i've heard any of those bands... but it sounds like music i'd be interested in. sounds like it's got its origins in john cage, ligeti, penderecki, stockhausen, kagel, ives, and a bunch of the other 20th century composers that i love. and i love noize. and strange sounds.

i'll check these bands out... thanks!

If it's good, it's very good. A lot of times, noise is self indulgent. I prefer making it than listening to it, in an ensemble especially.

I was surprised when all the bands were good. I don't see a lot of that at a concert of any genre.

i agree. I think that noise for the sake of noise is annoying, but if the noise is an actual attempt at making something normally thought unmusical musical, i like it

but if its just banging trashcans with glass just to make noise, then its not that great.

Neptune is fantastic! I haven't had a chance to see them live, but their album is great.

Personal faves of mine are Kites, Jessica Rylan/Can't, D. Yellow Swans, Bastard Noise and Mindflayer.

Seeing Alec Empire do a mainly noise set was a formative (and truly hypnotic) experience for me.

Yup, Neptune is something else. Watching them play is a trip. The venue I saw them in doesn't have a raised stage or anything (just a rug), so we got to stand close enough to risk being impaled by Mark's pointy guitar. And they were totally cool with us peering at all their homeade equipment and my dumb questions about the same. "Hey, what's this thing?" "That's a spring I hit with a stick."

Thanks to everybody that's mentioning bands, by the way. I don't have extensive knowledge of the genre, so it's good to have my horizons expanded.
