Is it normal?

To stop playing bass as much as I used to? I just started learning a bit of piano, and it just feels, I dunno, refreshing to be playing something different. I mean, I love bass playing, don't get me wrong, but it is a nice change.

No, it is completely abnormal.

Go & lie down in a dark room and get a rub-down with the National Enquirer by a cheerleader twice a day after food!!!

Then send all your bass equipment to me and I will make sure it is used appropriately!

Of course it's normal. It's actually very good to play some other instruments in between, it broadens your horizon and makes you a more versatile musician. Piano is also an excellent choice as second instrument.

I've played bass, drums, guitar, and vocals in bands... I think a person who can only play a single instrument tends to be VERY limited when it comes to understanding and making interesting music. I usually get bored with playing an instrument and move on to something else, only to come back around to each again at a later time. In my current experimental group I'm now able to do ALL of those things (as well as "playing" 60 cycle hum, keys, samplers, contact mics, etc) and it's the most liberating and inspiring musical environment I've ever been in.

So YES it's IMO very normal, and in fact very beneficial.

+1
In fact, I wish I could bring myself to learn another instrument. I'd love to learn piano.

Absolutely it's normal! I play/tinker with several other instruments.
...and I'm pretty average.

Ok, because over the course over about 4 years, I have learned a lot of drums, learned bass, learned a little bit of guitar, the other lead singer in my band, and now, a bit of piano. Actually the first song I think I am going to finish on piano is Let It Be. So I have all the makings for a one man band! Or, I could just clone a few more of me!
