I learned today of the death of Norton Buffalo, one of Northern California's finest musicians. Norton played harmonica with the Steve Miller Band for 32 years and recorded several of his own albums, as well as doing session and production work on scores of other recordings.
I was associated with him for a time in the early 90's through involvement in a community organization. I didn't know him well, though, and I never did get to play music with him, but I would have liked to. He was an excellent vocalist and a true virtuoso on the harmonica; his work with a chromatic harp is phenomenal. And, he did a great Walter Brennan impersonation, (listen to "Hangin' Tree" on Lovin' in the Valley of the Moon.) He was a good guy, too - honest, intelligent and more than willing to lend his hand when it was needed.
Norton's songs all have one quality: they make you smile. |
