Not Good Live Bands

That would have been WAYsted, Pete Way's (UFO) band. He's big mates with Steve Harris, which might suggest why they bagged such a prestigious support slot.

I've seen Paul Di'Anno a few times since he left IM and its been embarrassingly bad. For someone so bitter about his treatment since he left that band, his set was about 90% Maiden songs.

I've seen some vids of his recent live shows and his voice is shot.

I've seen Cheap Trick 56 times and they have been great every time. I am very surprised to hear people think they were not a good live band.
I've seen a lot of bad shows, but the one that always stands out for me was Dokken at Monsters of Rock at Pontiac Silverdome, following Metallica, who wore out the crowd for them. They were getting nothing back from the crowd and it showed.

Seeing some mentions of The Roots and RHCP here...saw the former support the latter in the Netherlands some years ago. The Roots were an eye opener...RHCP then put me to sleep.

Was that at the MCG? I was there and thought it was fantastic.... couldn't believe the sound was so good for what wasn't an ideal venue.

I was gonna say having to sit through Fergie as the opening act (what the?) was my entry into this thread... but I despised her beforehand and my expectations were astronomically low anyway, so I guess it doesn't really count.

I'm lucky to say I've never been truly disappointed by any headlining band I've paid money to see. Only some pretty lame opening acts.

George Lynch is the only reason I ever liked and saw Dokken.
I saw Dokken in the front row in 1985 opening for DIO and Lynch was on fire.

Thelonious Monster opening for What Is This and Red Hot Chili Peppers at a club in L.A. back in the 80's. Thelonious Monster just could NOT play at all, utterly incompetent on top of being completely drunk., I was booing which is rare for me.

Just read through these, some surprising some not so surprising. The only 2 I can think of that I actually took offense to:

Guided By Voices- ACL recording, they were wasted and the singer kept ranting to the crowd about how they "started indie rock" and how everyone should love them..."Do you know who I am"-esque stuff makes me violently angry. I don't care how cool you think you are.

Bloodhound Gang- My buddy just got a job bartending at the venue so he got us in for free, otherwise I never would have gone...I wanted my no-money back. They similarly told the crowd how many albums they had sold, the bass player ripped his shirt off and started flexing, they got a fat kid up on stage, made fun of him and got him to chug a bunch of Dr. Pepper, then they stopped in the middle of a song and demanded that everyone do the pledge of allegiance. I lost it somewhere in the crapathon and my half-full beer can flew out of my hand at the singer's head. I think I would still try to fight those guys if I saw them on the street today. What a bunch of losers.

Oh, and then the band "Live" who did Lightning Crashes?

Wow. they need a DNR clause for their shows.

I had the opportunity to see Wide Mouth Mason & Big Sugar live this year.
WMM killed it! They were incredible. Loud, but balanced sound, great energy!

Big Sugar, not so much. Gordie was fried out of his mind, the sound was just a giant wall, nothing was balanced, they played more reggae than blues-rock tunes (most of which I didn't recognize), and there were too many people on stage. They had the 4 core members of Big Sugar, plus both guys from WMM and some dread-haired hipster with electric organs doing "toasts" between songs, and a female vocalist (pretty cute) who had a REALLLY hot mic. The classic songs were rushed & 1/2-assed, while the reggae tunes all sounded the same.I got bored & left 1/2 way through the act.

The VH show @ the MGM Grand in Vegas was a $190 a seat (face value) TRAIN WRECK. I almost walked out but hung around to see if it could get any worse; and it did.
All in all I witnessed my favorite tunes hacked to death by an epic band.

I think small spaces + extreme volume = disaster. Add a band changing things up as they play and I wouldn't blame a sound person for giving up and letting them do as they pleased.
Motorhead have a reputation for being insanely loud . . . and turning up as the set progresses!

I saw Janes Addiction last September and they were simply amazing!
