Not happy with tone?

Has this ever happened to you guys? You play with the same bass, amp, effects, etc. with the same settings and everything that you have been using for a while, only to find that you hate the tone? Today I was playing with everything normal, but the tone just sounded god awful. It's a terrible feeling. Anyone else have that happen?

Are your strings dead, or is it really just time for a change? (one of those is cheaper to fix than the other!)

Yes. But then I realized that I had always sounded bad, because I sucked at Eq'ing.
Not that that's the case with you, but after I realized that how much I've been sucking at eq'ing my bass, it's been an adventure ever since

It`s not that my tone sucks, I just want something different now.

I can be happy with some aspect of my playing for years, then for any of a variety of reasons, decide that I don't like it anymore. I just experiment with different options until I either find what I (now) like or get tired of trying. Sometimes, I even go full-circle, & decide that I really liked the "old" way best after all.
