I either have some horrible luck with friends or someone somewhere is REALLY taking the mick.
I (used to!) have a small 15w guitar amp which did me for what I needed, which was little more than playing in my room and the occasional small demonstration at various band practices.
Anyway, a friend asked me if I would lend him the amp, because he was learning electric guitar and hadn't bought an amp yet.
Anyway, I agreed that he could keep the amp as long as he needed, because he was a good mate and I saw him regularly, so I could easily ask for the amp back.
Anyway, 2 weeks ago I asked about the amp, and he admitted that he'd lent the amp to a friend of his, who I didn't know really that well. But I decided to trust this friend of mine, and let it go.
Now I was hoping to get this amp back a few days ago, and when I asked, he'd admitted that this friend of his had pawned the amp. For money to buy weed.
Damn it!

Damn it! | I'm guessing this is a cover story by the original borrower. Dollars to donuts says he puked on it and is too ashamed to return it in said condition.

TBH it would cost me more to buy a similar amp on its own than it did to buy the original guitar+amp pack when I first got it.

Damn it! | How long had your friend had the amp before he passed it on? Not that I believe that there's a point where ownership transfers to the lendee if the lender hasn't asked for the lent item back for a long time, but the longer the loan (of anything) goes without being resolved, the less likely it is that it ever will be.
But I mostly agree; there are only a couple of folks to whom I would ever lend gear.
Does the pawn shop still have it? The stand up thing for your friend to do would be to be to buy it back for you. Whether his friend makes it right with him is his problem.

Damn it! | How on Earth do you people let folks do this crap to you. This is a reoccurring theme to quite a few threads. This just would not happen to me or any of the other musicians I know. ( I have been playing since 1972). You should get a new amp from this "friend" immediately!!!! OR Else!!! |

Oh, and you're just unlucky as well:P

Or, do what I've decided to start doing: draft up a 5 page contract and set forth the terms of the loan. I'd include the loan time frame, a deposit (that would buy you a new amp) dure RIGHT NOW, a weekly or monthly payment on top of the deposit, and their signature next to their driver's license, government ID card, home address and social security number. Have it notarized.
Odds are, the person won't want to borrow your stuff anymore by this point... |

He "lost" it and before I could get the money for it, he left the town. I'd gladly buy another one, but this time to CRACK OPEN his skull... ya know, that's why they make them Bosses so sturdy.

I even let our guitar player's kid (14-years old) borrow my bass. I got it back 2 weeks later in the same condition with a smile and a big "thank you".
Maybe you just need to find a more responsible group of friends. |

He owes you an amp or the friendship is toast, IMO.
Either that or kick his ass. Which ever is easier. |
