Now I know why everyone hates guitar Center

I went to Guitar Center, thinking maybe I could buy some books to enrich myself as a musician. I had a couple of dollars and I'm looking around.... And looking around, look in the tiny little bass books area right behind the huge counter of guitar books. (Even the piano books have a larger section) And I'm looking for anything on Jazz. I looked for a very long time. No books on jazz bass.

Because in order to hate something, you have to love it first.

But honestly I'd work there in a minute.

what?? they didn't have The Real Book there??

i don't know which GC you're close to, but a few books you may want to consider are "Building Walking Bass Lines" by Ed Friedland (which is usually in stock at ours, at least) and "The Evolving Bassist" by Rufus Reid. and... get a Real Book.

No, people hate GC because it's the Wal-Mart of music shops. It uses it's size to undercut the knowledgable and "interesting" local shops, and then pays random kids crap wages to be snotty and disinterested.

I recently watched a guy working at one of our local music shops talk a kid and his dad OUT of buying a sub-par drum set because the kid had more knowledge and skill than was appropriate for that set and the guy knew that it wasn't the right set for that kid. The dude guy actually lost HIMSELF a sale for the sake of "doing right by" a customer. At GC it's a pain in the ass to get someone to simply look up a price for you.

Go to musicdispatch.com if you're looking for music books. Expensive, but they have a huge selection. People sell their old instruction books cheap on amazon and ebay too.

This is definitely the case at some GC's. Not all, but some.

I like Guitar Centers, as a salesman I understand that their goal is to sell product. Where else can you try out such a wide variety of instruments and gear?

Find the right employee and they will hook you up with a killer deal. The BurgerMeister in Sherman Oaks did just that for me with a 30th Anniversary Stingray. Thanks again, Dave!

I think you're mistaken. They have a wide variety of guitars!

Our GC is only a few years old, and I end up in there once every 3-6 months trying to find something that one of our local shops didn't have. Every time the experience sucks and I regret going in.

i'm very sorry to hear that. sounds like there are some training issues with the staff there.

i wish i could say that the training is consistent throughout the chain, but that's simply not the case (though it really should be). some managers are more tolerant of the crew doing thing the wrong way than they should be. it's sad, and again, i'm sorry you have bad experiences every time you go in.

if you ever need anything, feel free to let me know. PM me, or call 818.990.8332 and ask for dave c. i'm glad to help in whatever way i can.

I honestly like the staff, it's the inventory that bugs me. I guess the experience is different from store to store.

Well, I said instruments, but come to think of it, they do have a pretty wide selection of basses. Fender, MusicMan, Spector, Ibanez, Yamaha, Warwick are just a few of the brands I can think of that are at my local GC. Granted, they may not be the ones you're looking to play, but I'd say that's a pretty wide variety.

If you're looking to demo numerous boutiques, I think you have to go to Bass Exchange in LA.
