Obscure music in public places

I was in Smoothie King today and suddenly a Widespread Panic song was playing. Not one of my favorite WP songs, since Mike was not present, but Widespread Panic nonetheless.

This reminded me of a time when I was in Wendy's and the Pink Floyd song San Trope started up. I know people who are obsessed w/ Pink Floyd who have never even listened to that album (Meddle). I'd say it's a fine album, w/ the exception of that song.

Another time I heard Widespread Panic in one of those Brinker&Brinker restaraunts (which shall remain nameless). It was a better song, Feels Like Mississippi, but still no Mike Houser.

Widespread Panic, by the way, has been one of the 20 top grossing bands in the country for well over a decade (at least as far as ticket sales) and most people have never even heard of them. On a related note, the late Mike Houser is the greatest soloist of all time by a long shot.

I was wondering if anyone had any similar experiences.

I'd love to hear Especially Likely Sloth in the elevator of a department store someday, but I doubt it'll ever happen.

I heard Birdland in a local pharmacy in the burgeoning metropolis of Heber Springs.

lol funny story... we do a cover of "Summer of '69" by Bryan Adams and our drummer came in one day after eating Subway and was like

"I bought my first real six inch... standing in the subway line, they asked if I wanted wheat bread, i told them honey oat would be fine... it was the best sub of my life"

So that was the running joke when we played that song, and then I acutally did hear that song playing when I was standing in the subway line. It was funny as hell

Chipotle always has a nice playlist. I've heard Charlie Hunter, MMW, Beck, Fela Kuti, and heaps of world beat stuff.

I heard Victor Wooten in a bar once, which was only unusual because it wasn't on an internet jukebox.

The bus drivers around UT campus sometimes have radio on, and happened once to hear some Manu Chao playing. I think he was listening to NPR, but they actually had a break in their fine programming to play some fine music.

I was pretty cool, I thought.

I heard "Tweezer Reprise" by Phish as the bumper to a coverage of a golf tournament.

But in the public places it's nothing but tripe around here behind the Orange Curtain.

I was in a department store in Japan when I heard a Dave Grusin tune from his Mountain Dance album (Marcus Miller plays bass on that album).

I was in a mini jewelry store and the woman behind the counter was playing Bob Marley & the Wailers, the first place I've heard that being played (with the exception of music stores o/c).
She was very nice too.

I was at a local hippie store, and the chick behind the counter was playing some jam band music.

... oh wait, that's not weird at all.

This Beer Pub in Dallas called The Gingerman - used to have a jukebox that was all handpicked selections by the staff and many of the regular guests. The staff liked me and a buddies taste in music so much, when it became time to get a new round of discs put in the machine, they gave each staff member 5 picks, and me and my buddy each got to pick 20 discs each. The only rule was, you werent allowed to pick any record that had "that one radio song on it" that would get played over and over and over - so more obscure the better.

Needless to say, there were always some very interesting selections on the juke box. 2 months later, it was voted best juke box in Dallas by the Dallas Observer hehe.

I was able to tap into my old work's Muzak system and had some weird stuff playing from time to time. Also check out the Weather Channel. If you get to the "local on the 8's" and watch it enough, you're guaranteed you will hear something that you wouldn't expect.

And frequently, it will be something by Weather Report. Those weather people are just so wacky! Nutty, I tell ya. Good times, good times.

Nice to see another WP fan on here....although I'm not too big on them now due to dropping George

Really? I haven't heard them w/ Jimmy Herring, but I think he's better than George. I just thought it would've been cooler if they''d used the guitar tech, sam holt. Using Jimmy Herring makes them like every other hippie band w/ a dead lead player.
