| Ode to my bass

The other day my wife was "shocked" at my emotional description of my bass. I stopped to think about it. I bought it new (my first bass!) back in 1985. It's been my constant companion. Through punk bands, garage bands, home recording, real "working" bands, it's been there for me. I really LOVE this bass. I'm not the best bass player and it's not the best bass ever made BUT it has served me well over the years. It's seen/played through horrific gigs, I've played great gigs, I've jammed with Buddy Guy and Koko Taylor. I've made great friendships through this bass, I've cried, sweated and got mad at this bass. It's almost human. It knows me and I know it. It's more than wood, metal and plastic. It's got attitude, funk, playfulness and should never be ignored. It's a part of me. It's a very personal experience. I've owned a lot of basses, sold most off, bought others but this one is a "keeper". It's a 1985 MIJ black on black on black Jazz Bass Special. Her name is Pearl and I lover her. |
