Remember that I don't accept pay for playing - a meal maybe and no alcohol while playing - but at this point in my life I don't want to get paid nor do I need any pay.

Tips? Maybe.

Fortunately my buddy is totally covered by insurance and a full-blown military brat medical dependent's policy - cradle to grave and everything in between. So donating won't matter at all.

You don't accept pay for work?

I don't get it. Who wouldn't accept money for the work they do?

I agree with you that three nights a week is a bit much if you have a full time job. That would be a big burden.

I'm currently working on getting plugged in with a couple (singer & guitar player) to play bass for them. No pay. Just for fun. Play a time or two a month. It's the gig I've been looking for. No pressure. Just have fun.

I've got a job, and have no interest in dragging in at 3am only to have to be at work at 8am.

I'm not the only oddball who won't work for the associated restrictions from being paid.

At this point in my life I am retired and don't want to be under a gun of getting money for
A) something I love
B) restrictions and 'do it my way' from a boss
C) I can leave if I want and the place is not out of any money
D) other things that become obvious when you aren't back into the working world - especially one that has it's day start at 10PM and end when you can fall asleep at 6AM and totally ruin your biological clock.

Kinda like getting paid for sex.

Like I said - I don't work, am enjoying being retired, spend a lot of time visiting my kids and their kids in several states all over the country - so a leash isn't something I want.

I drive and stop to sniff the roses, take a hundred pictures, eat at really dinky diners in tiny little towns and sometimes sit in on a bar band for fun.

I don't even have a cell phone except for 911 calls if I need to make such a call and THAT'S an old analog 'brick-phone' that can call out, but not in.

And NO - my VCR does not blink 12:00 all the time.

Oh no - I don't need to travel 60 miles - that's just how far away this gig is from another other place that's larger than a wide spot in the road.

I live pretty close to it really. Less than 10 miles. If they had a stop sign here, they wouldn't know where to put it up.

When the owner asked how I wanted to get paid and how much - I told him 'Oh, a meal before and maybe a snack during the session would be fine'. His jaw dropped.

They've got good food.

It's kinda a cowboy atmosphere - all around here are horse and cow ranches - so it fits. I don't think biker gangs will be a problem - as there are a lot of bar fights at another place over in Chihuahua Valley and that place is always full of sheriffs and paramedics.

Still............................................. .........

Do what you love and do it how YOU want to do it if you can.

I have a day job and do the 2-3 night a week gig thing on top of it and it's brutal (I'm starting to really get sick of gigging and actually sometimes get pretty cranky over having to do it). I wish I was playing a fun show once or twice a month for free with some audience appreciation instead. It seems like it's work now and I don't enjoy it 100% anymore and the people I'm playing for generally don't even realize we're there (even when we do "stunts" and acrobatics with the upright bass).

Go with your gut and don't end up resenting your gig like I do at times! It's not a good feeling.

If it would fit my schedule, I'd try to help him out for a month. Two weeks in...give him two weeks notice that you're out-when the month is over.

It's cool. Sounds like you have a pretty content, satisfying life, and that you don't need the money. I am happy for you.

However, my broke ass didnt have the luxury of coming up in better economic times, so I wouldnt turn away money for anything. Not even sex!

I took a day to think about this.

It makes sense, but I get to meet the rest of the inductees tomorrow in the early afternoon for a jam and see where we are, musically.

I dunnow about sticking to it for long, but it might be fun for a month at least.
