Ok, a listening "taste test" of some acoustic guitars..

Sign in to disble this ad
I came across these clips of the recordings of a few acoustics essentially playing the same tune..

I wondered what my fellow TBers thought of the tone of the various acoustics?

Vote for your favorite tone, and feel free to add comments.. I'll hold my comments until we get a few responses.

Do you know if these are all just dry recordings with no eqing or anything?

BTW, my favorite was the Martin.

I asked the website owners, a music store about them and they're all recorded directly thru a mike with no effects, and played by the same guy... just with some variations.

Seems like the Martin didn't record as loud however..

Yeah, I noticed that as well. I brought the volume down on the other two, so itd be a little more accurate. I think in a band setting, the other two would cut through a little better with the additional highs, but to me, they didnt sound as natural as the Martin. To this point, my favorite acoustic Ive ever heard is the Taylor 714ce. Its full, but with very natural, shimmering highs that I just love. Sounds awesome in a band environment as well solo. Someday if I get into playing acoustic more, and I have the money, Ill probably have one.

I like the Bourgeois and the Martin. The Bourgeois seems sweeter, but the Martin seems warmer, more welcoming.

the martin had the best sound to me, but i think thats more in the recording technique than the sound--my second place is the H&D

the martin, hands down. I've played country with guys who use Martin, it always sounds amazing to me.

The Martin sounded the most balanced of the three guitars. We're the other guitars rosewood bodies? I find mahogany in D Bodies is a little quicker sounding.

The Huss and Dalton was very close to Martin, the biggest difference was it didn't have as much high end as the Martin.

The Bourgesis sounded to me like a D bodied Rosewood guitar, big, fairly well balanced. but a little boomy on the the low end.

All three sounded good and I have a feeling three different Martins could have had as much difference in sound.

I think the Martin was the only Mahogany.. the rest were Rosewood. All were Adirondack tops however..

I almost chose the Bourgeois, then the Martin, but finally settled on the Bourgeois.

I like them both and I suppose if I was playing them I might feel differently.

I'm probably the first to post "I'm torn". I like all three, but differently.

The Huss & Dalton had the smoothest strummed tone.*
The Bourgeois Had the best low end.*
The Martin was best all around. But it's the Martin equivalent of a custom shop reissue. The recent Martins I've played would have been pretty anemic next to the H&D or the Bourgeois.

*At least over my computer's speakers.

I was expecting more "I'm torns" but my favorites go this way..

-Martin (warm, inviting, as if it were dipped in butter)
-H&D (sounds almost identical to my D45V, great Dreadnought sound, but no perfect)
-Bourgeois (a bit to bright, with not enough distinction between the Lows, mids and highs, i.e. too much mid's bias)

I tried to listen pretty close, and the Martin seemed to articulate better so it sounded more open and clear, at least to my ears.

Definitely, the Martin for me ... and by a big margin.

I've been hunting for an acoustic a bit myself, and I keep going back to the Martin line. I'm not real familiar with the Bourgeois, but it sounded kind of "middy" to me as well. The H&D was pretty good, too.

Just something about the Martins ... I think your description hits it on the head, Sam, very smooth and warm which is what I'm looking for in an acoustic. My only issue is the price, definitely on the high side for me, but then all of these basses are pricey .....

If you're ever ready to pull the trigger, PM me and I'll get you the best priced dealer that I use, he's over next to the factory and gets factory fresh stuff.. never handled by kids at Guitar Center

Not only Martin, but Taylor, H&D, Bourgois, etc..

I can't discuss the discount, but let's just say.. it's good!

I wish you would have left the choices unknown, Sam. I have to admit that initially, I leaned towards the Martin simply because it was a Martin...
