Idoubt im the only one who will say that its almost impossible to hear the bassline in the majority of metal songs, and frankly i have no clue how people tab the songs out. How do you guys do? Boost certain frequencies? Use headphones?

Two methods of solution.

1) Listen to metal bands where the bassist will do his own thing and/or has a very nice tone.
2) Majority of metal bands you can't hear the bass because he's playing the same thing as two guitars, and therefore is all but lost in the mix. Play what the guitar is playing.

If you can hear him, odds are he's got great tone, or isn't playing what guitars are playing.

If you can't hear the bass you can typically can assume that the bass is strictly following the guitarist, so the transcription is going to simply be following the guitarist in terms of rhythm and note choice.

yea, just assume the bass player is following the guitars or just playin inaudible root notes.

You know, i sometimes just cut the bass out for some metal songs using guitarpro and for some songs you wont notice any difference even if you pay attention to the bassline. especially those songs with multiple layered guitar tracks

Ok, so its not just me then? Ty guys, i realize its cos they follow the guitars, or the mids arent boosted enough. Even basslines that dont follow guitar can be hard to hear sometimes. Wish metalbasslines were more audible:I

Distortion is also a factor. The bass kinda disappears when it's kicked on.

I would say that much of the reason you cant hear some bass players is due to the production mix. Since metal is so dependant on a heavy bass laden distorted guitars, if they are hogging every frequency range chances are no matter how good the bass "Tone" is it will be inaudible.

well,i got some weird way to "hear" the bass...
get a subwoofer (not matter the size,i do it with a 3" subwoofer) WITHOUT a grill, and just slightly touch the speaker(not in a way that it will start to fart)
i have no idea how it helps that i touch the subwoofer, but it works.so i dont care

Might i ask what frequencies setup you guys have on Windows mediaplayer?
But i think ur right about it being cos they stick to guitars or just do root notes. Some bassists atleast seem to stick out a few moments so you can hear it well. Wish more bassists would atleast try to be heard a bit:O
