Crushing news, considering he's been there for 16 years.

Didn't see it coming, but I could have. He already said years ago he didn't really like the touring. I regret it though. But IMO Mikael Akerfeldt is Opeth, so it's not the end.

Plus they got a solid replacement in Fredrik Akesson, but it will take some getting used to seeing them perform without Peter. He might come back in a few years like Chris Amott did in Arch Enemy, then Fredrik is once again the odd man out though.

Whaaaaaat?! Geez... first they lose Martin Lopez and now Peter? That's terrible news... I'm sure they'll still be amazing though.

Having watched all their "making of" documentaries its pretty clear that all Opeth need is Mikael and some seriously good studio musicians to output the same quality of metal that they always have. That said, I always enjoyed seeing interviews with Peter as he always seemed very laid back and not the least bit pretentious. He had a great sense of humour too. Of all the people in that band, he is the one I would most have liked to have shared a beer with. Its a sad loss, but I am sure Opeth will keep moving on as always. If you think about it, Mikael is the only original member of the band now.

I didn't like Ghost Reveries very much, it's the only Opeth I don't own.

Mikael does all the writing still, right? That's what really counts.

I'm still having trouble believing this. Peter was always a big part of Opeth, and I'm starting to worry that Opeth might just become Mikael's solo project. With all due respect to Mikael's talent, I don't want that to happen (and I don't think Mikael would, either).
