Organ Advice

I want to buy an organ. I have loved rock organ for a while, so I figure why not add it to my list of instruments I own??

Basically I want some suggestions on some old brands of organs that sound good that I might be able to find lying around at random shops for cheap (hopefully). I need something on the smaller side.

I hear hammonds are popular rock organs, but I know slightly more than nothing about church organs.

This is the quintessential rock organ.

The B3 or C3 (essentially the same organ in a different cabinet) are the most sought after & command the highest prices. Don't overlook the smaller Hammonds like the M102 or the A100 though. Keith Emerson used to chuck an A100 about & got an absolutely mental tone out of the poor thing - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ptJ_PUx1mRk

Basically any Hammond with a tonewheel generator should fit the bill - along with a Leslie.

Pete.

Obviously Hammond + Leslie is a great choice… but I'm sure it's not cheap or easy to find.

My keyboard player uses an Alesis keyboard, which she bought used, and she gets some nice passable (IMO) organ sounds. Probably a lot cheaper and easier to move than a B3.

I used to play with a guy that found some great deals on Fender Rhodes pianos (usually in need of minor repairs to get a really great deal) I know it's not really an organ, but it's another kind of great vintage tone to be had by the keys player.

I have a '58 Hammond M3. They are pretty easy to come by and are a decent starter organ.

I bought mine from a church for $250. I've seen them go for $50 a few times.

If you get a vintage organ, you better not be afraid of tinkering!

Hammond M-100 series. I have an M-111 that I love (the last numbers are nothing but color/finish options) .... it's the same model JPJ used in all those LZ songs.
