Technically the most incredible piano player I ever heard. His rhythm was so good that even his 64th notes sounded quantized. And he was still doing it at 75 and 80 years old, a true genius, who played wit some great bass players. Nils Hemming Omstead Pederson and Ray Brown come to mind.

A great musician, and a really nice guy according to my Dad's buddy Ray Price who played drums in the trio for one album and, I think, a couple of tours back around 1970.

Here's a slightly later recording:

Lots and lots of chops and still beautifully musical. Great bass work from Brown AND Pedersen, too.

Man
He lives down the road from me and I've never seen him! He lived in Mississauga.

Terrible news

R.I.P. Oscar. Another Giant gone...

My Dad knew him when they were both teenagers, Oscar Peterson being from Verdun, a suburb of Montreal, and my Dad was from the Ville Emard section of Montreal, across the Aqueduct from Verdun. He used to go see him play and he became friends with him. When we were kids Dad used to regale me and my siblings about Peterson's prowess as a jazz pianist. He'll be sorely missed. RIP, Oscar.
